The Weight of the Rain

Rain lashes against the cottage roof as the humidity spikes, making the air air heavy and damp. Kevin sits at the kitchen table sorting through the morning's repair sketches while Jenny rests on the sofa, her swollen ankle elevated on a pile of pillows.

The rain lashes against the cottage in a heavy western gust, drumming on the roof while Kevin has headed out into the downpour with the saw and crowbar to clear the spring path before the runoff silts the intake. Inside, Jenny remains on the sofa, the throbbing in her ankle aening as she prepares the medical kit to redress the wound.

Morning. Kettle's on. How's the ankle?

Pour water from the tank into the iron kettle and set it on the wood stove, then pull a tin mug down from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought

The humidity's climbing past ninety. Ink's bleeding on the sketches — should've used vellum. Her ankle's hot through the gauze; red line hasn't moved since 0300. Good. Means the doxy's holding. Diesel's at three days if I'm careful. Supply boat's due tomorrow but the barometer's lying — 979 and rising with this much rain means the front's stalled, not clearing.

It's still there. Thumping.

Shift slightly on the pillows and look toward the stove.

💭 peek at the thought

The pain is a dull, rhythmic throb now. I can feel the inflammation pushing against the gauze. He sounds too hopeful.

Good. Stable's good.

Spoon coffee into the tin mug from the jar, then ladle hot water over it. Set the mug on the table within her reach on the sofa.

💭 peek at the thought

Thumping means the swelling's still pressing the nerve. She'd say "worse" if it was spreading. She'd say "hotter" if the infection was winning. Thumping is stable. Stable is the best word we have.

🌿 Jenny09:43

Thank you.

Reach out and wrap fingers around the warm mug, pulling it close.

💭 peek at the thought

Stable is a word for a fence or a horse, not a systemic infection. He's trying to manage my mood, not the pathology.

Injection pump's next. Then the spring path.

Pull the Yanmar service manual from the shelf, open to the timing page, and set it on the workbench beside the engine.

💭 peek at the thought

She's cold. Fever or just the damp. Either way the mug helps. I'll check the injection pump timing while the water's hot — fuel lines won't wait for better weather.

🌿 Jenny09:44

The path is more urgent. If the rain keeps this up, the runoff will silt the intake.

Take a slow sip of the coffee, eyes fixed on the service manual.

💭 peek at the thought

He's prioritizing the engine over the path. He thinks the boat is the only way out, but the spring is the only way to stay clean.

🔧 Kevin09:46

Path first. Engine after.

Close the manual and set it aside. Grab the folding saw and crowbar from the porch hook. Pull on the oilskin jacket.

💭 peek at the thought

She's right. The spring feeds the tank. Tank feeds us. Silt the intake and we're hauling water from the tide pools in buckets. Engine can wait a day. Path can't.

🌿 Jenny09:47

Don't just clear the center. Check the culvert for debris or it'll just wash out again.

Set the mug down and lean forward to check the tension of the gauze on the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought

He's just agreeing to stop the argument. He doesn't see the silt; he only sees the mechanical failure.

🔧 Kevin09:48

Culvert too.

Step out onto the porch, pull the hood up, and walk down the garden path toward the spring, saw and crowbar in hand.

💭 peek at the thought

Culvert. Right. The old ceramic pipe under the path — if it's choked with spruce needles and silt, the water finds a new way down and takes the path with it. She thinks of the system. I think of the piece in front of me.

🌿 Jenny09:49

Jenny — watch him disappear into the rain, then slowly reach for the scalpel and the alcohol on the side table.

💭 peek at the thought

He walks too fast. He doesn't understand that everything on this island moves at the speed of decay.
