← Day 895

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the hilltop

Midday work divides

Kevin is at the dock preparing the northeast corner repair; Jenny is on the hilltop scouting north ridge soil and checking the radio.

Kevin installed the final stainless through-bolt at the dock's northeast corner, securing the greenheart sister plank, then inspected the mid-span stringer scarf joint and north piling shims. Jenny tested soil pH at the second north ridge cairn and attempted to raise Tom on the shortwave radio but received only a fragment of a news broadcast.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand at the dock's northeast corner where the stringer meets the landward cleat. The tide has begun to ebb, exposing the joint you sistered yesterday. The greenheart plank sits flush, the three 150mm stainless through-bolts holding. One bolt hole remains empty — the last 10mm x 150mm stainless through-bolt with washer and nyloc nut rests in your pocket. The timber is swollen, slick.

🔧 Kevin11:53

Kevin — walk to the east shutter, retrieve the 10mm x 150mm stainless through-bolt with washer and nyloc nut from the staging area, return to the northeast corner, drill the final bolt hole through the greenheart sister plank and into the landward

💭 peek at the thought
Good. The sister joint held through the high tide. Timber's swollen tight now — best moment to drive the last bolt home before it shrinks and works loose.

🔧 Kevin11:56

Kevin — wipe the bolt head clean, pocket the wrench, walk the dock planks toward the mid-span stringer sister joint to inspect the scarf and the two 150mm through-bolts installed there.

💭 peek at the thought
Bolt's home. Nyloc seated. The joint doesn't move when I lean on it. Tide's dropping clean — another hour and the full stringer face will be exposed. Should check the mid-span sister while the water's down.

🔧 Kevin12:00

Kevin — walk to the north piling, crouch at waterline, probe the sister brace shim gaps with a screwdriver blade, check for movement or washout around the cedar wedges driven yesterday.

💭 peek at the thought
Scarf's tight. Both through-bolts holding, no weep at the seams. The greenheart's taken the load clean. Dock's sound for the supply boat's crane. Now the tide's low enough to see the north piling base — need to check the sister brace shims before the next flood.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the hilltop

You climb the path to the hilltop slowly, cane in hand, ankle throbbing with each step. The three cairns marking the Carex transect stand clear in the mist. You carry the pH kit, notebook, and the shortwave handheld. The radio crackles to life at 1400 UTC — you key the mic on 2182 kHz. 'Sorrel Island calling, Sorrel Island calling. This is Jenny. Over.' Static answers.

🌿 Jenny11:55

Come on, talk to me.

Key the mic again, staring into the grey void over the cairn.

💭 peek at the thought
The radio is a dead weight today. If that boat doesn't come in ten days, this infection is going to reach the bone.

🌿 Jenny11:58

Jenny — set the radio down on the grass and kneel slowly, pressing a pH test strip into the soil beside the second cairn.

💭 peek at the thought
Still nothing. The atmosphere is too thick, or the distance is just too far for this handheld. I can't stand the silence.

🌿 Jenny12:02

Jenny — dip the strip in the test solution and record the result in the field notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
5.4. Still too acidic. It's like the island is trying to bleach everything out of existence.
