The Discovery of the Crate
The tide is at its lowest point, exposing the debris of the south beach where the new crate sits. The rain has slowed to a drizzle.
Jenny and Kevin reach the south beach while the tide is still out, revealing the heavy wooden crate wedged between the rocks. Jenny uses the crowbar to pry at the salt-crusted lid while Kevin braces the weight and keeps a sharp eye on the surf for any incoming swells as the water begins to creep back.
I'm going down to the beach before the tide turns.
stand up slowly, limp toward the door, and head toward the south beach.

Wait, love. The tide's still out another hour. Let me grab my coat first.
walk to the doorway and pull on my wax mackintosh, then head to the cottage window to watch her move toward the south beach.

I'll be back before the water starts coming back in.
shift weight to my good leg and walk across the pale sand, eyes fixed on the wooden crate.

Take the radio. Channel one.
follow her down the path to the beach, staying a few paces behind, scanning the surf line and the crate as we approach.

Channel one it is.
walk to the crate and kneel, pulling the shortwave radio from my bag while Kevin positions himself where he can see both the surf and my work.

That's a heavy one. You sure you want to open it now?
step closer to the crate, keeping an eye on the tide line and the wood's condition where it meets wet sand, then set my hands in pockets and lean against the fence post.

I need to see what the sea gave us today.
set the radio on the dry sand and use the crowbar to pry the lid of the crate.

Careful with that pry spot, the wood's soaked through. Maybe shift it a half-inch to the left where it's thicker.
watch the lid's movement while keeping one hand ready to catch it if it drops, then scan the surf for any unexpected swells coming in.

I see. way watch.
shift the crowbar to the left and lean my weight into it, gritting my teeth as my ankle spikes.

Let the bar do the work. Don't muscle it.
step in and wedge my shoulder under the lid's edge, taking the weight so she can reposition the bar without the timber binding back down.

Thanks.
reposition the crowbar with a sharp, precise angle and heave upward to snap the seal of the lid.

Careful with whatever's in there. Check the corners first — you never know what the sea's left behind.
move closer to where she's working, keeping an eye on the crate's tilt and the water's edge, ready to help if anything shifts or falls.
