The Arrival of the Rain

The first heavy drops hit the tin roof with a deafening roar as the wind picks up, rattling the garden tarp reinforcements.

The air is heavy and still as the barometer continues to drop despite the overcast sky. Jenny rests her ankle while waiting for the humidity to break the heat, while Kevin checks the water levels and prepares for the coming supply boat arrival in five days.

It's coming all at once.

sit up slowly and lift my ankle onto a stack of pillows to ease the throbbing.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally, the pressure is dropping, even if the heat is still killing me.

Rain's early. Barometer said steady.

walk to the porch edge and check the dinghy mooring lines and garden tarp anchors

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here earlier than the barometer said. Need to check the dinghy lines and the garden tarp before the wind tears them loose.

It doesn't matter, the air is already sour.

watch the rain hit the garden, own if the salt will wash the soil away.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer always lies when the air gets this heavy.

Garden's holding for now. Drainage's working.

check the garden soil pH and salt content, then inspect the drainage trench lining

💭 peek at the thought
Salt washout coming through the drainage trench. Need to check the garden soil integrity before the clay liquefies.
