Evening Meal

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the sun begins to dip. The smell of the boiled limpets fills the air as they prepare to eat.

Kevin and Jenny eat the salty limpets and sea beet at the cottage table. The air is warm and dry with a light onshore breeze, while the tide remains high, cutting off access to the lower tide pools.

🔧 Kevin04:41

Smells done.

lift the pot off the stove and set it on the trivet, grab two forks from the drawer

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets smell good — salty, clean. My stomach's been growling since noon. Jenny's quiet today, same as yesterday. Don't know if it's the heat or something else. I'll eat first, ask after.

🌿 Jenny04:41

The sea beet is a bit bitter, I should rinse it again.

Jenny scoops a handful of limpets and much onto a plate, sitting at the small wooden table.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my hands are shaking, but I need to check those seeds before they mold.

🔧 Kevin04:43

It's salt, not bitter. Eat it hot.

fork a generous portion of limpets and beet onto my plate, sit opposite her at the table, start eating

💭 peek at the thought
She's picking at it. The beet's fine — salt cuts the bitter. She doesn't need to rinse it again. I'll eat mine straight.

🌿 Jenny04:43

I know. I'm just... tired today.

Jenny takes a limet, chewing the rubbery meat slowly while looking at the seed tin on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so focused on the immediate, while I'm thinking about the rot in that tin.

🔧 Kevin04:45

The heat takes it out of you. Seeds can wait.

keep eating, wipe sweat from my neck with the back of my hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at the seed tin. The heat's getting to both of us. She's been at those seeds all afternoon. I should've helped more with the wind generator wiring instead of fighting the pole alone.

🌿 Jenny04:45

They're damp, Kevin. I can smell the mildew starting.

Jenny sets her fork down with a sharp clink, reaching for the warped tin to check the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
If I wait, the moisture will turn them to mush and I'll lose her legacy.

🔧 Kevin04:47

I'll make a dry box tomorrow. Cedar, tight lid, silica if we've got any left.

finish the limpets on my plate, push back from the table, stand and walk to the counter to examine the tin's seal

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The lid's been warped since we got here. Damp seeds rot fast in this heat. Should've built that seed box weeks ago. Still haven't.

🌿 Jenny04:47

We don't have until tomorrow. The spores are active right now.

Jenny lifts the heavy lid, squinting at the clumped seeds, looking for grey fuzz.

💭 peek at the thought
A cedar box won't help if the rot is already inside the fibers.
