The Weight of the Letter

Kevin sits at the wooden table with the official letter from the Trust open beside the Yanmar log. Jenny sits across from him, her ankle wrapped in a clean gauze, as she watches the heavy air press against the window glass.

The air in the cottage is thick with humidity, smelling of damp wood and old salt. Kevin moves to the stove, his movements heavy in the still heat, as he fills the iron kettle with tank water. Jenny remains at the table, her pencil hovering over the intricate veins of a sea beet leaf in her notebook, but the persistent throb in her ankle makes it difficult to focus on the fine details of drawing.

Barometer's 982 and falling. Supply boat's due in four days if the window holds. You want to sign before they arrive, or after?

tap the trust letter with one calloused finger, then reach for the tin mug of coffee

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the weather, not the letter. Smart. The pressure's dropping faster than the trust's timeline.

🌿 Jenny00:45

I need to see if the boat actually comes first.

Jenny traces the grain of the wood on the table with a fingernail.

💭 peek at the thought
If I sign now, I'm locked here for another year of weeds and wounds that won't heal.

🔧 Kevin00:45

Fair.

take a slow sip of coffee, eyes on the window where the grey light presses against the glass

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The trust's paper means nothing if the boat doesn't cross the bar. I've seen three scheduled runs missed in eleven months.

🌿 Jenny00:47

I should check the salt soak. It's throbbing again.

Jenny shifts her weight, wincing as the movement pulls at the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He makes it sound easy, like the island isn't trying to swallow us whole.

🔧 Kevin00:47

I'll heat water. You stay off it.

push back from the table and move to the wood stove, filling the iron kettle from the tank tap

💭 peek at the thought
The infection's not gone. She's tough but the metronidazole course finished yesterday and the heat in that joint hasn't broken.

🌿 Jenny00:49

It's too thick today anyway.そもそもDO: Jenny reaches for her notebook, opening it to the page with the sea beet sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the water is the problem, but the humidity is the real thief.

🔧 Kevin00:49

Salt soak first. Sketches after.

set the kettle on the stove, then pull the basin and salt tin from the shelf, measuring a generous handful into the basin

💭 peek at the thought
She's changing the subject. The sketches mean she's thinking about the ridge transect, not the ankle. Stubborn in the right direction.

🌿 Jenny00:51

The ankle won't wait for the sketches.

Jenny pulls the notebook closer, her pencil hovering over the morphology of a sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
He always wants a schedule, like order can stop the rot in the wood.
