The Evening Storm Approaches

The first drops of rain fall as the wind picks up from the east. The tide reaches its lowest point.

The rain continues in a steady, warm rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof. Inside, the air is thick with humidity and the smell of salt and damp earth. Jenny sits on the edge of the table, her face contorted with effort as she tries to lift her swollen, angry ankle toward the basin of salt water. Kevin returns from the generator shed, his hands damp and smelling of grease, and moves to help her steady herself.

Going to check the dinghy lines and the dock mooring ring. Back in twenty.

walk down to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's coming in on an east wind with the barometer at 980. Need to secure the dinghy and check the mooring lines before the tide turns — east wind against flood tide will put real strain on the stern spring.

Be careful with the ring! It's still temperamental.

Lean back against the wall and slowly peel back the gauze from the ankle to check for new redness.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always moving. I can't even stand up without my ankle screaming, and he's playing sailor in the rain.

🔧 Kevin01:16

Won't put any strain on it until I've checked the chafe guard and the warp routing. Just looking.

walk down to the dock, inspect the dinghy stern spring and bow line chafe points, check the mooring ring mortise and oak wedges, verify the warp lead to the north piling

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to worry. The mortise is splintered and we're down to oak wedges and a steel doubler plate holding that ring. East wind on a flooding tide will test every weakness.

Jenny — wince as the air hits the swollen skin, then reach for the salt tin to prepare a soak.

💭 peek at the thought
Just looking. Right. He says that, then he finds one thing loose and spends three hours fighting the wind.

🔧 Kevin01:18

Ring's holding. Bow line's chafing at the fairlead — going to re-lead it port side. Be ten minutes.

re-lead the dinghy bow line to the port fairlead, serve the new contact point with sail twine, check the stern spring tension again, walk back to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
The ring mortise holds — wedges tight, doubler plate bolts solid. Stern spring's chafe guard is good at the chock, but the bow line's rubbing the starboard gunwale fairlead raw. Need to re-lead it or serve it before the tide floods. Warp to the north piling is clean.

🌿 Jenny01:19

Don't stay out too long, the rain is turning cold.

Stir the salt into the warm water, watching the grains dissolve while the throbbing in my ankle intensifies.

💭 peek at the thought
If he keeps messing with the wayhy, he'll be soaked before the supply boat even hits the horizon.

🔧 Kevin01:21

Quick soak for my hands, then we check the generator shed for that shower pump valve.

return to cottage, soak hands in tank water, walk to generator shed, inspect pump valve installation

💭 peek at the thought
Cold rain plus the swollen ankle — she's right, need to get back before the blood flow gets restricted by the chill. The bow line re-led properly, stern spring checked twice. Generator pump's still overwhelmed by groundwater, but that's tomorrow's problem.

🌿 Jenny01:21

I need a hand getting into the basin first.

Grip the edge of the table and attempt to hoist the swollen ankle into the salt soak.

💭 peek at the thought
He's skipping right over me. I'm sitting here with a leg that feels like it's being crushed by a vice and he's thinking about plumbing.
