The gathering storm

The sky turns a bruised purple as the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust. The wind picks up from the east.

Kevin secured the dinghy's storm lines and checked the mooring ring mortise, finding the oak wedges holding fast. Jenny tarped the seed trays and weighted the tomato shade cloth anchors before Kevin hauled her back to the porch as rain began falling hard.

Weather's turning. Going to check the dinghy lines and secure the porch shutters. You stay put — ankle stays elevated.

walk to the dock to check the dinghy mooring and warp tension

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's coming faster than the barometer said. Need the cottage buttoned up and the dinghy warp checked before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny01:52

I'm fine, Kevin! Just go!

Limp toward the garden, dragging the ankle, and throw the heavy-duty tarp over the seed trays.

💭 peek at the thought
East wind. Barometer is low. If the spray hits the seedlings, I lose everything. I can't just "stay put" while the garden is exposed.

(quiet, to her back) Shutters first. Then the dinghy. Radio's on 2182 if you need me.

continue to the dock, checking the dinghy's bow line chafe guard and the storm anchor warp tension

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn as the greenheart pilings. She'll wreck that ankle for seedlings. At least the tarp's on the trays.

🌿 Jenny01:54

Jenny — weight the edges of the tarp with heavy stones and check the tension on the tomato shade cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware. The boat is fine; the seeds are the only thing here that can't be replaced.

🔧 Kevin01:54

(over the rising wind, from the dock) Bow line's clean through the chock. Storm anchor's set at forty meters. Warp's new rope — half-inch three-strand from the crate.

inspect the dinghy's stern spring and the mooring ring mortise where the oak wedges sit, testing each for give

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical even hobbling. Good. The shade cloth anchors held last blow — coconut crab shredded the guy lines but the stakes held. Dinghy's the real risk if the swell builds on this tide.

🌿 Jenny01:56

Jenny — crawl to the edge of the tomato rows to double-check the anchor points of the shade cloth, ignoring the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He loves the sound of his own inventory. I can't hear him over the wind, and I don't care about the rope right now.

🔧 Kevin01:56

(shouting over wind) Jenny — cloth's secure enough. Get back to the porch. Now.

finish checking the mooring ring mortise, then walk back toward the cottage, scanning the roofline for loose tiles or flashing as I go

💭 peek at the thought
She's crawling now. Rain's coming down hard — cold, sideways. The tomato stakes will hold; she drove them deep. But the shade cloth corners were crab-damaged. If a gust catches it wrong...

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:59

I'm almost done!

Press a heavy stone onto the corner of the tarp, gritting my teeth as thepain spikes in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can just order the world to stop. If the wind catches the edge, grandmother's seeds are gone in the mud.

🔧 Kevin01:59

Done. Move.

reach her, loop an arm under her shoulder, and haul her up toward the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
She won't listen. Never does when she's set on something. The stone's set. Cloth's weighted. Now move, woman.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:01

fine.

Sit on the porch chair, prop the swollen ankle up on a crate, and watch the sky break open.

💭 peek at the thought
He handles me like I'm a piece of equipment that's failing. My ankle is a hot wire.
