The Weight of Air

Kevin sits at the heavy table checking the barometer while the kettle whistles on the stove. Jenny rests on the bench, her ankle propped on a stool as she watches the grey fog press the window.

Dawn breaks over a heavy, grey sky as the humidity sits thick against the cottage. Jenny wakes to throbbing pain in her ankle while Kevin checks the barometer and prepares for the supply boat's arrival in three days.

Barometer's steady. 980. Tide's low. Going to check the dock ring and north piling while the water's down. Salt basin ready when you are.

pour boiling water from kettle into the enamel basin, add salt from the tin, stir until dissolved, set basin on the table to cool to bearable heat

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer holding at 980. Steady's better than falling. Kettle's singing — water's hot for the salt basin. Jenny's watching the fog instead of the letter on the table. Good. One thing at a time.

I'm ready. Don't stay out too long if the tide shifts.

Reach for the clean gauze and wince as the movement pulls the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the salt water is the only thing this leg needs, but the humidity is eating me from the inside out.

Be back quick. If the lines start singing, I'll know before the tide does.

grab the shortwave radio, check frequency 2182 kHz, then head for the door with the dock inspection kit — barometer, flashlight, and the tell-tales from my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's already shifting. 980 means it's coming in fast if the wind backs west. Her skin pulled bad — should've waited longer for the poultice to dry. But she's ready now. Better than waiting for the storm to catch us both.

Jenny — carefully lower the ankle into the warm salt water and let out a long, slow breath.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always listening for something that isn't there. I just need this swelling to go down so I can actually walk.

🔧 Kevin01:34

(nothing — already at the door, pausing only to check the barometer face one last time)

step out onto the porch, pull the door shut behind me, and walk down the path toward the dock with the tide still low and the fog thick off the water

💭 peek at the thought
Good. The breath means the heat's taking the edge off. She'll soak it proper now. Dock won't take long — low tide gives me twenty minutes on the ring and the north piling sisters. Back before the water's up to the shims.

🌿 Jenny01:36

Jenny — lean back against the wall and stare at the heirloom seed trays, checking the soil for any new signs of fungal fuzz.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. Quiet. I can actually think without him hovering or trying to 'fix' things.

🔧 Kevin01:37

(nothing — focused on footing, the radio clipped to my belt, flashlight beam cutting the mist)

reach the dock at low water, crouch at the mooring ring mortise, run fingers over the oak wedges driven in yesterday — check they're still seated, no play in the ring, then move to the north piling sisters to verify the through-bolts haven'

💭 peek at the thought
Fog's swallowing the path. Can barely see the dock planks ahead. Tide's turning — water's already licking the lower stringers. Need to move fast on the ring and north piling before the current takes the shims.

🌿 Jenny01:39

Jenny — gently swirl the ankle in the brine, eyes scanning the seedlings for the slightest hint of grey mold.

💭 peek at the thought
Just a few more days until the boat. If I can just get the swelling down, I can find a real spot for the seeds.
