Evening at the shrine

Rain has eased to a drizzle. Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together, Kevin carrying the storm lantern, Jenny leaning on a driftwood cane. The shrine's ring of weathered stones appears ahead — the carved initials 'LB' and a newer spruce scrap inscribed 'I'm still here' beside a quartz pebble marked 'LB'. Wind comes off the water, cold.

Kevin and Jenny inspect the old shrine as the tide goes out. Kevin discovers the ridge is shifting due to silt-lubrication at the base of the shrine stones, forcing them to retreat to the cottage as the clouds thicken further.

🌿 Jenny02:02

It's shifting. The whole ridge feels... loose.

Lean heavily on the driftwood cane and stop at the edge of the stone ring, staring at the 'I'm still here' carving.

💭 peek at the thought
Every step feels like a needle in my joint. I can smell the ozone and the wet stone; the air is too heavy.

🔧 Kevin02:02

Aye. North piling shifted another centimeter since yesterday. Crossed the line on the map.

stop beside her at the stone ring, lantern held low to catch the carvings — LB, E, my own mark — and scan the ground between the stones for fresh cracks or slump

💭 peek at the thought
She felt it too. The ridge moving underfoot. That's not imagination — that's clay letting go.

🌿 Jenny02:04

It's not just the dock, Kevin. Look at the tilt of the center stone.

Point a shaking finger toward the largest weathered stone, noting a hairline fracture in the grey silt at its base.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thinking about the dock. I'm thinking about the soil underneath us. If the piling is moving, the whole slope is sliding.

🔧 Kevin02:04

Silt's washing from underneath. Clay's lubricating.

crouch at the center stone, lantern light grazing the hairline fracture, fingers testing the gap for depth and moisture

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The center stone's listing. That fracture at the base — silt washing out from under it. The whole ridge is sliding.

🌿 Jenny02:07

We need to get back to the house. The ground isn't holding right now.

Shift weight to the good leg, wincing as the throb spikes through the ankle, and turn toward the path down.

💭 peek at the thought
If the clay is moving, the whole ridge is going to go. I can't even walk to the cottage if this starts.

🔧 Kevin02:07

Two minutes. Let me check the back side.

circle the stone ring counter-clockwise, lantern beam raking the outer edges of each stone where they meet the slope, checking for fresh slump or exposed root-plates

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. But if we leave it, the next rain takes more. The shrine's stood two hundred years — it goes, the ridge goes with it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:08

Just be quick. I can't stand here much longer.

Grip the driftwood cane tight and watch his silhouette against the grey sky, eyes scanning the cliff edge for any signs of a larger slip.

💭 peek at the thought
Two minutes is too long when the earth is sliding. He's so focused on the mechanics of it that he's ignoring the feeling of the wind.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin02:09

Three stones on the seaward side. Root plates bare. Clay's polished underneath — it's ready to slide.

straighten, lantern swinging, and walk back to her side — close enough to take the cane's weight if she needs it

💭 peek at the thought
Three stones on the seaward arc — the silt's peeled back clean. Root plates exposed, grey clay slick underneath. The whole ring's on a detachable block. One good saturation and it walks.

🌿 Jenny02:10

Then we're done here. Let's go. Now.

Lean into him, letting him take some of the weight as I start the slow, painful pivot back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Polished clay. That's a slip plane. The whole ridge is a deck of cards waiting for a push.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin02:11

Aye. Slow down the slope.

match her pace, arm braced under her shoulder, boots picking careful purchase on the wet grass as we descend the ridge path toward the cottage lights

💭 peek at the thought
She's trusting me with her weight. First time in weeks. Don't waste it arguing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:13

Watch the footing. It's getting slick.

Keep eyes fixed on the cottage door, counting the steps to mask the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Every step is a needle through bone. If that ridge goes tonight, the garden is going with the sea.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:13

I've got you.

shorten stride to hers, boots testing each step on the slick grass, the cottage door growing larger in the lantern's glow

💭 peek at the thought
Cottage's fifty yards. Porch light's on. Kettle's still warm. Get her inside, ankle in the salt basin, door shut against the damp.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:15

Just get me inside before the rain breaks.

Lean my weight into his arm, wincing as the ankle throbs against the brace.

💭 peek at the thought
He's steady, but the ground isn't. I can feel the whole island shifting under my feet.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:15

Nearly there.

guide her up the porch steps, shoulder taking the door's weight as I kick it open, steer her straight to the chair by the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's holding for now. Cottage door's ten yards. Porch boards are slick — need to hit the mat clean.
