Midday Silt Alert

The humid air hangs heavy as the pressure continues to drop. The generator begins to strain as the silt settles deeper into the pump housing.

Kevin and Jenny moved to the generator shed to inspect the water pump after noticing pressure drops. They used the torchlight to peer into the housing, only to find significant grit and deep pitting on the impeller vanes.

🌿 Jenny02:43

Kevin, the generator is coughing. The silt is getting into the line.

stand up slowly, wince, limp toward the generator shed while clutching the wall for support.

💭 peek at the thought
That pump is going to seize if I don't clear the intake, but my ankle is screaming at every movement.

🔧 Kevin02:43

Sit down. I've got it.

Walk to the generator shed, pull the intake hose, and inspect the filter housing for silt bypass.

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't be moving on that ankle. The silt's past the filter housing now — if it scores the impeller we lose the pump entirely.

🌿 Jenny02:45

way check the bypass. If the seal is shot, the whole system's grit tomorrow.

lean against the whitewashed stone wall, rubbing my swollen ankle, and watch him work with narrowed eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so quick to take the weight, but I'm the one watching the filters fail.

🔧 Kevin02:45

Seal's been soft since April. Knew it'd go.

Crack the filter housing, pull the cartridge, and shine the penlight into the impeller housing to check for scoring.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The bypass seal's been weeping for weeks. If grit's past the primary filter, it's already in the pump. Need to check the impeller housing while I'm at it.

🌿 Jenny02:47

If the impeller is scored, we're losing water pressure before the storm even hits.

sit down painfully, groaning through my teeth, and look at the grit in the filter.

💭 peek at the thought
April? It's been degrading for months. The humidity is eating the rubber whole.

🔧 Kevin02:47

Check the housing walls while I pull the impeller. Light's better from your angle.

Unbolt the pump cover, pull the impeller, and hold it up to the light to check the vanes for scoring.

💭 peek at the thought
Impeller's bronze. Scores easy. If the vanes are gouged we lose pressure at the worst time — storm coming, tank full, pump the only thing keeping the cottage dry. Spare impeller's on the workshop bench. Swap's twenty minutes if the housing bolts don't seize.

🌿 Jenny02:48

Pass me the light.

slide down the wall to a seated position on the porch floor, lean forward, and peer into the pump housing.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants me on the floor. Fine. If I can see the bore, I can tell him exactly how much we've lost.

🔧 Kevin02:49

Here.

Hand her the penlight, then rotate the impeller slowly between thumb and forefinger to check each vane for gouges or pitting.

💭 peek at the thought
She's close enough to see the vanes. Good — two sets of eyes. The housing bolts came free clean, which means the anti-seize held. That's something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:51

The housing is pitted. See that? Right at the intake curve. It's been grinding.

shine the penlight deep into the pump housing, tracing the scoring on the inner walls with the beam.

💭 peek at the thought
The walls are pitted. It's not just silt; it's abrasive wear from the groundwater.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin02:51

How deep?

Reach for the feeler gauge in my pocket, slip a 0.10mm blade into the worst pit, and check if it catches.

💭 peek at the thought
Pitting at the intake curve means the silt's been cycling for months. Housing's cast iron — won't heal. If the clearance is gone, the pump cavitates under load. Need to mic the bore, but the 12mm auger bit's twisted and the micrometer's in the workshop. Spare housing went with the Perkins parts crate. Might have a bronze adapter sleeve left from the Yanmar raw water pump repair.
