Midday Heat Still

The overcast sky refuses to dip lower as the tide climbs against the dock pilings.

Kevin and Jenny inspected the dock mooring lines as the tide rose. They found the chafe guard on the bow line was fraying, but the rope itself remained holding for now. They decided to wait for the tide to drop before attempting to replace the protective sleeve.

Kevin — walk to the dock and check the mooring lines at the bow and stern springs

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's coming up hard against the pilings. North wall's already weeping. If the barometer doesn't drop another five millibars by dark, the swell won't touch the garden wall. But if it does — and the wind backs west like the notebook says — every line on the dock needs checking before first light.

The tide is coming in, Kevin. Watch the tension.

Reach for the notebook on the porch table and sketch the way the water is swirling around the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to snap that line if he doesn't give it slack.

🔧 Kevin04:32

Bow spring's singing. Stern's holding. Gonna check the chock.

walk down the dock to the bow chock and inspect the chafe guard on the spring line

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The current's already stacking against the starboard piling — that's the one with the sister brace. If the warp chafes through at the chock again, we lose the bow.

🌿 Jenny04:32

Don't lean too far over the edge!

Shift weight carefully to sit up, watching the water line hit the greenheart sister plates.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too focused on the line and not the current. One wrong surge and he's in the water.

🔧 Kevin04:34

Not leaning. Looking.

crouch at the bow chock and run a thumb along the served chafe guard where the spring line passes through, checking for fresh wear

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen me go over once. She doesn't need to see it again.

🌿 Jenny04:34

Is it fraying?

Lean back against the porch wall and rub the swollen skin of my ankle through the gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so meticulous about the rope, but he doesn't see the way the whole dock is shivering.

🔧 Kevin04:36

Serving's good. Rope's fuzzing underneath. Buys us one more blow.

stand and walk back along the dock to the stern spring, testing tension with a boot against the line

💭 peek at the thought
The serving's intact — sail twine holding. But the rope underneath feels fuzzy where it kisses the chock. Another storm and it'll need replacing. Again.

🌿 Jenny04:36

We should just replace the guard now while the tide is high.

Close the notebook and look toward the horizon for any break in the grey.

💭 peek at the thought
One more blow. He says it like a deadline.

🔧 Kevin04:38

Hands are shit today. Wait for the tide to drop — line goes slack, work's cleaner.

lean against the stern piling and watch the water climb the greenheart sister plates, marking the height with a boot toe

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. High tide means slack line, easier work. But the spare chafe guard's in the workshop shed, and the humidity's got my hands swelling. Splicing served line with fat fingers is a good way to lose a fingertip.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:38

It's higher than yesterday.

Gently lower the leg and test the weight on the ankle, wincing at the throb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's marking the water like it's a map. It's not just the tide; the whole island feels like it's breathing.
