Evening at the ridge

The sun begins to set behind the clouds as Kevin and Jenny climb toward the ridge to visit the stone circle.

Kevin and Jenny met at the old shrine as the sky thickens and the heat lingers. Kevin used his headlamp to inspect the ancient carvings while Jenny monitored the falling tide and her swelling ankle. The humidity is heavy, signaling an approaching storm front.

🌿 Jenny04:41

Don't let the wind catch you on the descent. The shale is slick.

Lean heavily on the driftwood cane and limp slowly toward the center of the stone ring.

💭 peek at the thought
Every step feels like a needle in my ankle. The air is too thick; it tastes like salt and old iron.

🔧 Kevin04:41

Cairn at the saddle marks the turn back. Don't push past it.

walk behind her up the ridge path, one hand free at my side, the other ready to catch if the shale gives

💭 peek at the thought
Watching her move up the slope, the way she plants the cane before each step. Ankle's worse than she's saying. The stones have been here longer than the lighthouse, longer than the trust, longer than any of us. Names carved soft by salt and time. I should've built that garden wall proper. Should've finished the sensory beds she talked about. Eleven months and the weeds still win.

🌿 Jenny04:42

I know where the saddle is, Kevin.

Stop at the edge of the stone circle and stare at the worn names on the rock.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm a piece of porcelain. I can handle a bit of shale, even with a throbbing ankle.

🔧 Kevin04:42

Kevin — stop three paces back, boots planted on the shale, letting her have the circle without me crowding it

💭 peek at the thought
She knows every inch of this ridge. Better than me. The cane trembles in her grip — not the wind. Her knuckles white. She's reading the names I've walked past a hundred times without stopping.

🌿 Jenny04:44

Jenny — run a finger over the soft, weathered edge of the 'E' stone, tracing the curve of the letter.

💭 peek at the thought
He's giving me space. Or he's just waiting for me to collapse. I can't tell which is worse.

🔧 Kevin04:44

Light's failing. Ten minutes to the saddle if we go now.

shift weight to the downhill foot, ready to move, not pressing

💭 peek at the thought
The 'E' stone. She found the quartz pebble carved with 'LB' here last week. Left it where it lay. Now she traces the 'E' like she's reading braille. The light's going flat behind the cloud bank. Her ankle can't take the descent in dark.

🌿 Jenny04:46

I just want to see if anything grew in the crevices.

Bend down slowly, wincing, to inspect the moss and lichen clinging to the base of the stones.

💭 peek at the thought
Just ten more minutes of silence. The humidity is starting to break, but the sky looks bruised.

🔧 Kevin04:46

I'll hold the light. You look.

unclip the headlamp from my belt, click it on, aim the beam low at the stone bases so she doesn't have to bend further

💭 peek at the thought
She'll kneel on shattered shale with an ankle that's tracking red past the calf. For moss. For lichen. The infection's eating her and she's cataloguing what grows on graves. I carry the medevac forms in the dry bag. The letter to Tom. The spare impeller. She carries the notebook with sea beet sketches. We both know which one gets used first.
