Midday at the cottage and garden
Kevin is at the keeper's cottage, hungry and empty-handed after the failed lime packing. Jenny is at the north ridge garden, having flagged the weeping soil pockets.
The humidity remains heavy and oppressive, keeping physical work on the brush at a standstill. Kevin and Jenny rest in the cottage as the midday heat peaks, waiting for the supply boat in ten days.
You sit at the cottage table, the half-sack of lime still damp on the floor beside you. The barometer on the wall reads 985 hPa and falling. Through the window, the supply boat is a dark smudge on the horizon, two hours early or late — you can't tell. Your stomach growls loud enough to hear over the wind.
Kevin — walk to the porch and raise the binoculars to the horizon

You crouch by the uppermost flagged pocket on the north ridge, watching a thin ribbon of grey clay seep into the crack. The wind gusts, tearing at the shade cloth over the tomato rows. Below, the dock pilings disappear under the rising flood tide. You have the notebook, but no pH strips, and the supply boat is due any hour.
Not today, please not today.
Use the trowel to scrape a sample of the weeping soil into a plastic bag for later testing.

Jenny — limp back toward the cottage, clutching the soil sample and notebook to my chest.

Jenny — stop at the kitchen table and set the muddy soil bag on the wood next to the stove.
