The Night Before the Storm

The rain intensifies, and the wind begins to howl through the cottage eaves as the barometer continues to drop.

The heavy dry air hangs still as the supply boat is now nine days away. Kevin spends the evening checking the structural integrity of the dock and pump while Jenny manages the pain in her ankle in the stifling heat.

Wind's backing west. Barometer's dropping through 970. We're not crossing tomorrow.

Pull on oilskin and boots, grab the heavy mallet and the spare 150mm stainless bolt from the east shutter, head out to the dock to check mooring lines and sister joint bolts before the tide drops.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's closing in faster than the barometer said. Generator flush can wait — need to batten the dock lines and the garden tarp before the wind shifts west. Jenny's ankle won't take the crossing tomorrow anyway.

The tide is already coming in, be careful.

Watch him go through the window, then return to the sketch of the north ridge soil pockets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get himself killed trying to secure the dock in this surge.

Back before it covers the planks.

Move down the porch steps onto the slick grass, cross to the dock at a crouch, test the first plank with a boot before committing weight, work along the seaward side checking the bow line chafe guard, the stern spring splice, and the north

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — tide's pushing earlier than I figured. Swell's already licking the dock planks. Better work fast and not slip.

Jenny — set the notebook aside and move toward the porch, leaning against the doorframe to watch his progress on the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too optimistic about the timing. The surge will be here long before he's finished checking the bolts.

North piling shim's walking out. Mortise gap's widened. Need to drive it home before the next swell hits.

Brace against the stringer, swing the heavy mallet two-handed, drive the cedar shim deep into the north piling mortise, then check the 150mm through-bolt torque on the sister plate while I'm there.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's sheeting sideways now. Dock's moving under me — not just flex, the whole structure's breathing. North piling sister joint's holding but the shim's working loose. Can see daylight through the mortise.

Don't over-drive it! You'll crack the grain!

Grip the doorframe tight, wincing as the wind gusts, eyes locked on the mallet's impact.

💭 peek at the thought
If that shim splits under the pressure, the whole sister plate is useless.
