Crossing the Shelf
The dinghy reaches the narrowing shelf just as the rain intensifies; the pair must find deep water before the tide and current push them toward the rocks.
Heavy rain lashes the island from the west as the humidity spikes, stalling all outdoor work. Kevin checks the water levels and the cottage roof for leaks while Jenny manages the throbbing pain in her ankle. They remain indoors as the storm worsens, preparing for the coming supply boat arrival.
Hold the bag tight. Keep your weight center. I'm going to push the throttle through the narrows.
Push the Yanmar throttle up to 2200 RPM, steer hard to starboard edge of the channel, and power through the narrowing shelf before the ebb tide sets us onto the rocks.

Just get us through!
Clutch the dry bag to my chest and lean hard into the center of the thwart, bracing my good leg against the hull.

Kevin — hold the starboard line through the narrows, watching the depth sounder lead line marks on the gunwale, ready to kill the throttle and pivot if the bottom shows sudden.

Jenny — close my eyes for a second and press my forehead against the waterproof canvas of the seed bag, breathing in the smell of old oil and rain.

We're clear. Deep water ahead.
Ease the throttle back to 1800 RPM, trim the tiller for the open channel run, and glance aft to check the wake for any sign of following sea building.

Don't let up too much. The swell is still building.
Open my eyes and look back at the narrowing shelf, watching the white water churn where we just were.

Holding it.
Keep the throttle at 1800 RPM, eyes on the stern quarter for the first sign of the swell lifting the transom, ready to match speed to the wave face.

It's getting darker. We need to make the crossing before the visibility goes completely.
Shift my weight slightly to stabilize the boat and tighten my grip on the seed bag.

Radio check coming up. Then we commit.
Reach one-handed for the handheld VHF on the dash, key 2182, and call the supply boat captain while holding the tiller steady.

Jenny — lean forward to listen, squinting through the rain at the grey horizon.
