The Thickening Sky

The air grows stifling as the first heavy drops of rain hit the dry dust of the garden path.

Kevin moved the seedling trays inside to protect them from the rising rain as it began to fall. He checked the intercept trench near the garden wall to monitor the drainage levels before the soil became saturated.

🌿 Jenny07:07

Kevin! The rain's starting. Get the trays inside, now!

Try to stand up, leaning heavily on the porch railing to keep weight off the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Here it comes. If the rain is this heavy, the seed trays will be drowned or washed out before we can get them under cover.

Moving them.

Scoop up the seedling trays from the garden table and carry them onto the porch, setting them on the floor boards under the eaves.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity finally broke. Rain's the least of it — damping-off will explode in this heat if the trays stay wet. Need them under the porch roof now.

🌿 Jenny07:09

Good. Leave them there.

Limp slowly toward the kitchen door, gripping the railing for support.

💭 peek at the thought
Thank god. I can't risk those seedlings drowning in a flash flood. Now I just need to get some food in me or I'm going to pass out.

🔧 Kevin07:10

Stay off it. I'll bring the broth.

Walk into the kitchen, lift the pot from the stove, pour the remaining limpet broth into a tin mug, and carry it out to the porch table beside the seedling trays.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the bad ankle hard. The poultice isn't holding the swelling down like it should. She needs to stay off it entirely.

🌿 Jenny07:10

Thank you.

Lower myself carefully back onto the porch bench and reach for the mug.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being useful, but the tone is so clinical. Like I'm a specimen he's managing. Still, I need the calories.

🔧 Kevin07:13

The trays will be safe here until the storm passes.

Set the mug down carefully on the bench beside her, then move to the window to check the barometer reading, watching the rain begin to drive harder against the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
Her voice was barely a whisper coming up the stairs. She's running on empty - both physically and from what she hasn't said all morning.

🌿 Jenny07:13

It's not just the trays I'm worried about.

Take a slow sip of the warm broth, feeling the heat hit my stomach.

💭 peek at the thought
996 and steady, but the air feels wrong. He's so focused on the numbers that he misses the smell of the ozone.

🔧 Kevin07:14

What else.

Lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, waiting. Not pressing — just making it clear I'm not going anywhere.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been holding something back since we crossed the channel. The way she didn't mention the supply boat silence, or Tom's letter on the shelf. Now the rain's here and she's choosing her words like she's measuring rope for a critical lift.

🌿 Jenny07:15

The weep zones. If the saturation hits the clay layer too fast, the wall might shift.

Set the mug down and look toward the garden wall, squinting through the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks this is just about the equipment. He doesn't understand that the soil is practically liquefying under us.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin07:16

The trench held last week.

Step off the porch into the rain, pull the hood up on the oilskin, and walk toward the garden wall's north end where the drainage bed meets the foundation, checking the water level in the intercept trench.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The intercept trench we dug at the northeast foundation only goes so deep. If the clay saturates and the fracture line she mapped on the north ridge connects through — the whole wall could slide. We lime-washed it yesterday like that meant something permanent.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:17

Be careful! The mud is slick as glass!

Winince, clutching my ankle as I watch him own off the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out there in this? The idiot. My ankle is going to scream if I try to follow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:18

I'm not the one with a shattered ankle.

Slow down, test each footfall on the grass slope before committing weight, crab-walking sideways toward the intercept trench to keep my center of gravity low.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The clay's already greasing up. One wrong step on that slope and I'm down too — and there's nobody to haul either of us back up.
