Rest in the Rain

You reach the cottage just as the rain turns into a heavy downpour. Jenny sits at the table to elevate her leg while you dry the damp gear from the shrine.

Kevin lit the fire in the stove to warm the cottage as the air thickens outside. Jenny ate the limpet broth while managing the throbbing pain in her ankle. They discussed the approaching clouds and the rising humidity.

Sit tight. I'll get the stove going and dry the gear.

Hang damp gear from the shrine trip near the stove, check the firebox, add kindling and a couple of spruce rounds, light it. Then pull the kettle onto the hob for hot water.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's coming down hard now. Need to get the gear dried and the cottage buttoned up before the temperature drops. Jenny's ankle is still the priority — she needs rest and elevation.

Thanks. I can't even feel my toes right now.

Sit in the kitchen chair, prop my own up on a stack of books, watch the fire catch.

way own feels like it's being squeezed in a vice, and this humidity is just making the skin itch.

The broth's still warm from earlier. I'll get you a mug.

Ladle the remaining limpet broth from the pot into a tin mug, set it on the table beside Jenny. Sit opposite with my own mug, blow steam off the top.

💭 peek at the thought
Cold toes mean circulation's still compromised. The poultice and antibiotics are working but it'll take time. Warmth helps. So does keeping weight off it.

It smells good. Thanks.

Take a slow sip of the broth, wincing as the movement throbs in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry but the smell of the salt is making my stomach turn.
