The Approaching Squall

The first gust of cold wind carries the scent of salt and rain as the sky over the north ridge begins to break.

Kevin attempted to reinforce the garden wall before the storm arrived, but the saturated soil caused the stones to slip despite his best efforts. Jenny tried to retrieve the heavy canvas tarp from the shed, but the high winds and slick grass made the task exhausting and dangerous.

🔧 Kevin09:28

Rain's fifteen minutes out. Tarp corners holding?

walk to the north end of the garden wall with an armload of stones, setting them along the gap where the wall meets the ridge

💭 peek at the thought
Squall's moving faster than I thought. Need to get these stones laid and the mortar bedded before the rain washes it out. Jenny's on the porch — she'll see the line coming same as me.

Check the tension lines on the lee side. They're slipping.

Walk to the center of the garden and pull the shade cloth taut, securing the edge with a heavy stone.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wind catches the flap, it'll rip the eye into the mesh.

🔧 Kevin09:31

Stones won't hold in saturated ground. I'll drive stakes upslope and run guy lines once the wall's bedded.

lay a bed of mortar in the wall gap with the trowel, pressing stones into place one by one, working fast against the darkening sky

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — lee side always goes first when the wind shifts south-east. Stone's a temporary hold. Need proper deadmen if this blows through the night.

🌿 Jenny09:32

Don't overfill the joints, or it'll just wash out.

Move to the windward edge of the tarp and check the bamboo stakes, pressing them deeper into the silt with the heel of her boot.

💭 peek at the thought
Mortar in this humidity... it'll be a slurry before it sets if the rain hits it too hard.

🔧 Kevin09:32

Joints stay shallow. Pointing comes after the storm.

strike the joints flush with the trowel edge, scraping excess mortar clean, then stand and scan the ridge line for the first rain streaks

💭 peek at the thought
She knows mortar. Learned it watching me last season. Wind's picking up — can hear it in the rigging on the dock. Rain'll hit the ridge first, then roll down.

🌿 Jenny09:35

The soil is already weeping. We need to move the seedlings now.

Run to the cottage to grab the seed tin and the pH test kit.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the sky, I'm looking at the slope.

🔧 Kevin09:35

I'll get the trays. You grab the tarp roll from the shed — we'll shelter them against the cottage wall.

sprint up the ridge path toward the seedling bench near cairn 3, legs driving hard over the slick grass

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast. Ankle's holding. Good. But seedlings on the ridge go first when the slope lets go — seen it twice now. Tin and kit can wait. Plants can't.

🌿 Jenny09:36

Careful! The edge is soft!

Walk to the shed and heave the heavy canvas tarp roll over her shoulder.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to trip if he keeps sprinting on that slope.
