Afternoon work at the garden and woods
Kevin continues the garden wall at the north return; Jenny gathers kindling from the fallen spruce and heads back toward the garden.
The humidity remains heavy over the garden, making the air thick and stifling. Kevin attempts to clear some brush but finds the slick conditions make any real progress impossible today. Jenny spends the afternoon managing the heirloom seedlings and monitoring the weather for the supply boat's arrival.
You mix a fresh batch of lime mortar, the bucket cool against your thigh. The north return stones are staged and ready. You set the first stone, bed it, tap it level with the trowel handle.
Kevin — lay the first course of the north return, bedding each stone in fresh lime mortar and tapping level with the trowel handle

You reach the tangled spruce trunk, branches still caught in the shade cloth wires. You pull a dead branch free, snap it — dry inside. Good kindling. You start stacking armfuls, working back toward the garden path.
Jenny — gather armfuls of dry spruce branches and stack them neatly by the garden path.

Jenny — wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of a hand and look toward the cottage.
