Supply boat contact and evening meal
Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table as the shortwave crackles to life. The supply boat captain confirms arrival at tomorrow's high tide. Kevin pours coffee from the kettle. Jenny's ankle rests on a chair, wrapped and elevated. The barometer still reads 1010.
The humidity is a heavy weight over the cottage as the flat sky thickens into a deep, bruised purple. The tide is out low, leaving the shore flats slick and smelling of rotting kelp. Inside, the heat radiating from Jenny's ankle pulses in time with the throb, while the smell of salt and damp wood lingers in the stagnant air.
Tomorrow high tide. Two hours. He'll wait.
pour coffee into both tin mugs, set one in front of Jenny

Two hours isn't much if the crane sticks.
Reach for the mug, fingers brushing the warm tin.

Crane's been sticky on the downstroke. We'll row out if we have to.
slide the manifest across the table toward her, tap the item marked 'Yanmar impeller - replacement'

Just make sure the boat actually shows this time. continuedDO: Look down at the manifest, then at my swollen ankle.

He acknowledged on 2182. Logged the ETA. That's more than last time.
pull the radio notebook over, flip to yesterday's entry, slide it toward her — the captain's own words in pencil

It's a start.
Scan the captain's handwriting, then push the notebook back toward him.

Best we've had in months.
take a sip of coffee, set the mug down, pull the Yanmar housing sketch from under the notebook — the one with the pitting measurements — and study the starboard side again

Let's just hope the weather stays on our side.
Lean back in the chair, wincing as the movement spikes the throb in my ankle.

Weather's not the variable. The boat is.
reach across the table, two fingers on her wrist — just checking the pulse, light, quick — then back to the sketch, pencil marking the deepest pit depth at 0.8mm

I'm fine.
Gently pull my wrist away and take a slow sip of the coffee.

Didn't say you weren't.
let the pencil rest on the sketch, blow across the coffee steam, watch the barometer needle through the window reflection — 1010, still — and wait for the tide to turn

The air is getting thick again.
Look out the window at the thickening clouds, watching the light over the ridge.

Barometer hasn't moved yet.
stand, cross to the porch door, pull it open a hand's width — let the damp air in, taste it, watch the cloud line over the ridge

The humidity is too high for the Seeds.
Rub a hand over my ankle, wincing as I feel the heat radiating from the swollen skin.
