Supply boat preparations and ridge inspection
Kevin is at the dock checking mooring lines and the Yanmar raw water pump housing; Jenny is at the cottage preparing the dock landing area and planning her north ridge inspection.
Kevin returns to the cottage from the dock, frustrated by the deep pitting in the Yanmar housing and the decaying state of the dock planks. Jenny is already at the north ridge, having discovered that the soil near the fallen spruce is acidic but viable for the garden extension.
You crouch at the dinghy's transom, flashlight beam probing the Yanmar's raw water pump housing for corrosion while the engine sits cold. The replacement impeller from the supply boat is still hours away. Salt crust coats the bolt heads; the housing bore feels rough under your fingertip. You wipe it clean with a rag and note the pitting.
Kevin — wipe the housing bore clean with rag, run fingertip over the pitting to gauge depth, then stand and stretch back. Walk back toward the cottage with the flashlight beam low.

Kevin — climb the dock ladder to the path. Head up toward the cottage, flashlight cutting through the salt spray.

You rinse the tin mug and set it to dry, then pull on your boots and wrap the ankle brace tighter. The limpets sit heavy but good in your stomach. You gather your notebook, the pH kit with its two remaining strips, and the hand auger.
Jenny — walk toward the north ridge, pausing to adjust the weight on my left foot.

Come on, just hold.
dig a small hole to take a sample near the base of the fallen spruce.

Jenny — dip a pH strip into the damp soil and hold it up to the light.
