Morning wall-laying

The tide continues to drop, revealing more of the rocky floor as the pressure on the garden wall's drainage increases.

Kevin mixed a stiff batch of lime mortar for the garden wall's upper lifts while Jenny retrieved the remaining limpets from the stove. The tide dropped faster than expected, increasing pressure on the wall's drainage, and a coconut crab was active in the garden overnight.

🌿 Jenny13:01

The tide is pulling out too quickly, Kevin. Watch the lower stones.

squat to wipe grit from my palms and inspect the moisture line at the base of the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water drops this fast, the soil pockets on the north ridge will erode before I can finish the wall.

Got it. Keeping the hose on the base. You want the upper lifts now or wait for the tide to turn?

spray the lower wall courses with the garden hose, keeping the fresh mortar damp as the tide drops

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The spring tide's pulling harder than the almanac said. If the wall base dries too fast the lime won't carbonise proper — we'll lose the bond before the upper lifts even cure.

🌿 Jenny13:03

Wait twenty minutes. The wind is picking up and I need the soil to settle before we lift.

make a quick sketch of the wall's current state in my notebook to track the alignment for the next course.

💭 peek at the thought
If I wait, the sun will Set the mortar too fast, but if I start now, my ankle might give out.

🔧 Kevin13:05

Twenty minutes. I'll mix the next batch while we wait. Lime's breathing better today.

turn to the mortar tub and begin mixing the next batch of lime mortar, working sand and lime together with the hoe

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes. Wind's swinging northeast — that'll dry the mortar faster than the tide's dropping. She's thinking ahead. Good.

🌿 Jenny13:05

Don't over-water it. Keep it stiff for the upper lifts.

walk slowly back toward the cottage to get the limpets off the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually paying attention to the texture for once. Still, my stomach is screaming.

🔧 Kevin13:07

Understood. Stiff mix coming.

check the mortar consistency, scraping the sides to ensure even texture, then set it aside to firm up while Jenny returns

💭 peek at the thought
Stiff mortar for the upper lifts. Wind's picking up northeast - she's right, can't afford to over-water. The limpets on the stove mean she's thinking about dinner too.

🌿 Jenny13:07

Jenny — enter the cottage and scoop the remaining limpets from the pot into a tin mug.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't think straight on an empty stomach. God, I'm shaking.

🔧 Kevin13:08

Kevin — watch her through the cottage doorway, then turn back to the mortar tub and test the mix with the hoe blade, letting it firm in the wind

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow. Ankle's still giving her trouble even after the debridement. Should've offered to fetch them.
