The Night before the Tide

The air is still and heavy; the first drops of rain hit the corrugated roof as the tide begins its slow turn.

Kevin returned from the north ridge as the first light of dawn broke, his headlamp flickering after the tarps were secured and the stakes re-driven into the sodden earth. Inside the cottage, the smell of boiling water filled the air as Jenny sat quietly, nursing her throbbing ankle and watching the rain continue to streak the salt-crusted windows.

🔧 Kevin13:48

Rain's starting. Going to check the north ridge tarps before light goes.

Walk to the north ridge garden expansion to check tarp battening and drainage.

💭 peek at the thought
First drops on the roof. Barometer's been holding at 1009 but the sky's got that bruised look. Tide turning means the wall gap gets pressure from the seaward side — lime mortar needs to breathe, not drown. Should check the tarp battening on the north ridge before it's too dark to see.

Take the flashlight. The ridge is going to be slick glass.

Watch him leave from the porch, then press a cold cloth to my swollen ankle and wince.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out now in that humidity, he'll slip on the ridge clay and I can't help him.

🔧 Kevin13:50

Flashlight's dim.

Grab the LED headlamp from the hook by the porch door and head up the north ridge path.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The clay goes to grease when wet. Flashlight's on the hook by the door — battery's dimming but it'll do for the ridge.

🌿 Jenny13:50

Jenny — lean back against the wall and stare at the seed tin on the table, tracing the rust with my eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to be out there for hours if he tries to fix the drainage in the dark.

🔧 Kevin13:52

Kevin — reach the north ridge garden beds, assess the loose tarp corner and leaning stakes, batten down the tarp with timber strips and re-drive stakes.

💭 peek at the thought
The beam cuts thirty feet of slick trail. Cairn two's visible — tarp corner flapping loose on the windward side. Shade cloth anchors holding but the oak stakes Jenny drove are leaning. Rain's coming harder now, fat drops hitting clay. Need to batten that corner before the tarp sails.

🌿 Jenny13:52

Jenny — slowly stand up and limp toward the kitchen to put the kettle on.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope those stakes hold. If the wind catches that tarp, it'll rip the seedlings right out of the soil.
