The Morning Tide Gift

Kevin and Jenny stand by the north garden wall as the dry sun hits the fresh stone. A heavy wooden crate thuds against the rocks in the surf, washed in by the receding tide.

The tide has retreated further than the charts predicted, leaving the rocks beneath the dock exposed. A heavy wooden crate is wedged firmly between the stones just off the starboard piling, bobbing in the receding surf. Kevin and Jenny stand at the edge of the dock, watching the salt water pull away from the garden wall's lower foundation.

Did you hear that? Down by the rocks.

Lean heavily on the drift cane and squint toward the surf.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming, but that sound... that's a heavy impact. Something new.

🔧 Kevin13:59

Heard it. Sounds like the tide coughed something up at the dock line.

walk down to the dock to get a better look at the crate in the surf

💭 peek at the thought
Crate in the surf. Tide's out — might be the one we lost last month, or something new. Either way, it's heavy wood and the sea's giving it back. Worth a look before the next swell takes it again.

🌿 Jenny14:01

Don't just stand there, check if the water is coming back in!

Limp toward the stairs, wincing as weight hits my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
It's too heavy for him to lift alone, and the salt will ruin the wood if it stays there.

🔧 Kevin14:01

On it. Stay on the steps.

walk down the dock stairs to the water's edge and check the tide line and the crate's position

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — tide turns fast here. Need to check the water line and see if that crate's coming in or going out. Ankle's slowing her down; I'll take point.

🌿 Jenny14:03

Is it floating or grounded?

Grab the railing of the dock for balance and watch the waves hit the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If that's the supply crate, it's early. If it's just debris, I'm going to cry.

🔧 Kevin14:03

Grounded. Wedged in the rocks off the starboard piling. Tide's still dropping — it's not moving yet.

crouch at the water's edge to examine how the crate is stuck and check the waterline on the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's heavy in the water — riding low, not floating free. Wedged in the rocks off the starboard piling. Tide's still dropping, so it's not going anywhere fast. Might be able to get a line on it at low water.

🌿 Jenny14:04

See if the seals are intact. If it's open, the contents are probably salt-mush already.

Carefully descend the first few steps, keeping all my weight on the cane.

💭 peek at the thought
Wedged. Great. If it's airtight, we might actually save what's inside.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin14:04

Lid's shut. Hasp's barnacled over — can't tell if the seal held from here.

reach out and scrape barnacles off the hasp and lid seam with the crowbar to check the seal

💭 peek at the thought
Salt-crusted lid, edges look sealed but the sea works slow. Barnacles on the hasp. If the gasket held, might be dry inside. If not... only one way to know.
