Kevin hunches over the Yanmar engine, adjusting the carburetor while the rain drums against the plastic tarp. Jenny sits on a crate nearby, sorting the damp heirloom seeds onto paper towels to check for mold.

The rain continues its steady, rhythmic drumming against the metal roof of the shed while the tide has receded to its lowest point, exposing the slick rocks and kelp-tangled pools of the cove. At the dock, the air is heavy with the scent of salt and damp earth.

Jenny spreads a handful of poppy seeds across the paper towel, inspecting each one for white fuzz.
