The storm breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the roof as the wind begins to howl.

Kevin and Jenny secured the cottage against the rising storm. Kevin lashed the whipping coax cable to the mast bracket, then returned to lash the mast itself to the porch rail after the bracket showed cracking. Jenny held the ladder steady in the gusting wind and moved the heirloom seed tin under the wood stove for protection.

But that coax whipping in seventy-knot gusts will shear the mast bracket bolts, and we lose the only voice off this rock. Tape's in my pocket. Spare line coiled at the base. Three minutes work if the wind doesn't throw me first.

Coax is snapping like a whip; I've got two turns of tape on it and a half-hitch with the spare line. One more turn and it'll hold. Ribs protest the stretch, but the mast bracket's still intact. After this, the dinghy's our only real way off if the supply boat doesn't make the window. Need to check her mooring before the swell builds on the south beach.

She's seen it — the hairline crack in the mast bracket itself, running from the bolt hole toward the edge. Not the insulator. The bracket. Cast aluminum, old fatigue. This wind's putting torque on it through the coax lashing I just made. If the bracket shears, the mast goes, and the radio's gone for good. Need to take the load off the bracket entirely. Slack the coax, lash the mast to the porch rail instead. Bracket's just a fairlead now, not a load bearer.
