Morning Work Begins

Kevin and Jenny stand in the kitchen doorway, mugs steaming, looking out at the overcast sky and the garden rows beyond. The barometer on the wall reads 985 hPa and rising, the needle climbing steady since dawn. Kevin rolls his shoulders, testing the ankle brace, while Jenny tucks her sketchbook under her arm and nods toward the porch where the radio parts wait.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

The barometer's climbing. We've got six days before the supply boat, and I need to finish the radio housing repair so I can document the salt gland morphology properly in the field notebooks.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure's holding steady now, which means I can afford to wait on the radio transmission. But that doesn't change what I need to do—finish the insulator housing, sketch the succulent salt glands, transplant those tomatoes before they topple over.

Radio parts on the porch. Spare insulator in the tin by the stove. Tape's half used. I'll start the generator, get the Yanmar warm while you look at the housing.

💭 peek at the thought
Radio first. If the housing's cracked through the mounting boss, the insulator won't hold. Need to check the spare porcelain and the self-amalgamating tape. Then the dinghy — sail bent on, reef points tested, Yanmar under load. Six days until the boat. That's the window.

🌿 Jenny08:47

Got it. I'll check the housing crack measurements while the generator warms up, then fabricate the proper ceramic insulator housing from the spare parts and epoxy.

💭 peek at the thought
The generator's running—good, that means power for the radio work. But I need to focus on the ceramic insulator housing, not let the generator warm up distract me from the actual repair work.

Yanmar's in the dinghy. Fuel line's primed. I'll fire it up once the genny's steady.

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's catching. Good. Let it warm through. Yanmar next — need to verify the float needle holds at full throttle, no vibration. Then the dinghy at slack tide. Barometer's still climbing. That's something.

🌿 Jenny08:49

Keep it steady. I'm starting on the insulator housing now.

clean the area of the housing crack and prepare the epoxy for the ceramic mount

💭 peek at the thought
If the engine is running, I can test the pump later, but right now I need to get this housing finished. The humidity is making the epoxy tricky anyway.

🔧 Kevin08:49

Engine's running smooth. No vibration at idle. I'll give it throttle in a minute, see how the float needle holds.

advance the throttle lever slowly to half, watching the exhaust and listening for misfire

💭 peek at the thought
Yanmar caught first pull. Idling clean, no smoke. Let it warm. Oil pressure up. Temperature rising. Good. Reef points on the sail held last time — need to verify under load. Slack tide in two hours. Barometer still climbing. Six days.
