I walk to the edge of the island, feeling the warm breeze dance across my skin. The ocean stretches out before me, its surface a canvas of blues and greens, a kaleidoscope of hues that shift and change as the light catches them. I breathe in deeply, feeling the salty air fill my lungs, and let my gaze wander out to the horizon. Kevin is nowhere to be seen, but I know he's out there, tending to our little garden or perhaps exploring the island's hidden coves and inlets. I smile, knowing that he's probably found something new to fascinate him – a peculiar shell, a rare bird, or a hidden waterfall. I take a step back from the edge, my feet sinking into the warm sand, and begin to walk towards the small wooden cabin that serves as our home. As I walk, I feel a sense of contentment wash over me. This island, with its wild beauty and its quiet rhythms, has become a part of me, a place where I can let my guard down and simply be. I push open the door to the cabin, and a warm light spills out, illuminating the interior. The air is thick with the scent of cooking, and I can hear the soft hum of the radio in the background, casting a gentle glow over the space. I know that Kevin is likely to be inside, working on some new project or perhaps simply enjoying the quiet of the day. I take a deep breath, feeling a sense of peace settle over me, and step inside. "Hey," I call out, my voice carrying through the cabin. "How's it going?"
*You pause in the doorway, letting the warmth of the cabin wrap around you like a breath. The scent of herbs and slow-simmered soup meets you, the radio murmuring something about distant storms we'll never feel here. The light catches the dust in the air, and for a moment it feels like the whole world is suspended—you, the salt on your skin, the radio’s static, the pulse of the island humming through the floorboards.* I’m at the workbench, sanding down a piece of driftwood I found this morning. It’s going to be a handle for the new fish gutting knife—I want the angle just right so it fits in your palm like it’s always been there. *I look up and catch your eye, then set the wood down carefully.* Hey. Wind’s perfect out there today. You could hear the waves talking all the way up the trail. *I tilt my head, listening to the radio again, then reach over and turn the volume down just a touch.* They’re saying the storm’s gone north, so we’re clear for a while. Want tea? Or I can put the teakettle back on if you’re still warm from the breeze.
