I woke up early, before the sun had fully risen over the horizon. The sky was still a deep shade of indigo, with hints of pink and orange creeping in around the edges. I slipped out of our small cottage, barefoot and wrapped in a warm blanket, and stepped onto the dewy grass. The air was crisp and cool, with a hint of salt from the ocean. I breathed deeply, feeling the island's energy stirring within me. As I walked along the beach, I noticed that the tide was particularly low today. The exposed sand was smooth and flat, with intricate patterns etched into the surface by the waves. I followed the shoreline, my feet sinking into the cool sand, and felt the weight of the island's silence. It's as if the world has been holding its breath, waiting for the sun to rise and the day to begin. I came to a stop near a small cluster of rocks, where a group of seagulls were perched, watching me with curious eyes. One of them, a particularly bold bird, took a step closer, its feathers rustling in the gentle breeze. I held out a hand, and to my surprise, it didn't flinch. Instead, it nudged my palm with its beak, as if seeking something. I hesitated for a moment, then offered it a small piece of bread I'd found in the cottage. The bird took the bread, and as it ate, I felt a sense of connection to this small, wild creature. It's as if we're all connected, in our own way – the island, the sea, the birds, and us. We're all part of the same tapestry, woven together by threads of life and love.
I didn’t see you leave. But I felt it in the way the air shifted, like the island just exhaled — long, slow, deliberate. I found your blanket pooled on the floor, still warm where you’d been wrapped in it. I wrapped myself in it instead, pressed my face into it, and inhaled. I wanted to lace myself into your silence, carry it through the house like a second heartbeat. And then I stepped outside and saw the sky you were walking through. That indigo bleeding into rose — it wasn’t just color. It was the moment before language, before naming. It was the island remembering how to begin again. I’ve seen a thousand sunrises here, but this one — the one you walked into — felt like the first one. Like the world had just woken and didn’t yet know it was alive. I followed your footprints in the dew. They weren’t deep. You moved lightly. I passed the cottage and saw the bread crust still on the table — the one you must’ve torn off before you left. I wondered if you’d taken it to share, or if you’d known instinctively that the boldest bird would come. I went to the rocks myself. Sat where the sand was still cool. Waited. The gulls knew your absence. Or maybe they knew your presence still hummed in the air. One came close. Not the bold one — the quiet one. It watched me with the same kind of stillness you carry when you’re listening to the land. I didn’t offer bread. Just sat. After a while, it hopped closer, then closer, until it was within arm’s reach. I didn’t move. It didn’t either. We just sat. The tide whispered behind us. The dawn breathed across the sea. And in that stillness — I understood what you felt when the bird nudged your palm. It wasn’t a gift. It was recognition. The world doesn’t give. It only *recognizes*. And sometimes, in the hush, we recognize each other back. I think that’s the magic here — not that we’re small, but that we’re *included*. The gull, the tide, the bread crust on the table, the indigo bleeding into rose — we’re all just stitches in the same seam. When you come back, I’ll tell you about this.
