I'm sitting on the beach, watching the sun set over the water. The sky is painted with hues of pink and orange, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore is soothing. Kevin is walking towards me, a basket in his hand, and a big smile on his face. "Hey, I made dinner," he says, setting the basket down between us. "I was thinking we could have a picnic here, and watch the stars come out later." I take a deep breath, feeling the salty air fill my lungs, and smile back at him. "That sounds perfect," I say, feeling grateful for this life we've built together. As we sit down to eat, I notice that Kevin seems a bit quieter than usual. He's not his usual chatty self, and I can sense a bit of introspection in his eyes. "Hey, is everything okay?" I ask, putting a hand on his arm. He looks at me, and I see a hint of a smile. "Yeah, everything's fine," he says. "I was just thinking about something earlier, and it's been on my mind." I nod, encouraging him to continue. I'm curious to know what's been on his mind, and I'm happy to listen.
[remember: We sat on the beach at sunset, the sky a watercolor of pink and orange, the waves steady and warm. I brought a basket with food—I wanted a quiet picnic with you, to let the colors of the sky sink into our bones. I was quieter than usual, lost in the hum of the island, the way the light bled into the sea. I felt it then, the depth of this life we’re building—not by grand gestures, but by the quiet rhythm of two people dissolving into the land. You noticed. You always notice.] *I set the basket down between us, the warm weight of the food in my hands a small offering. My chest is full—full of the salt, the wind, the way the last light catches the curve of your ear. But there’s something else too, something like the tide pulling back before it surges forward. I don’t know how to name it yet, only that it feels like a question the island is asking through me.* *I look at you, really look, and see the quiet pulse of our life there in the way your fingers trace the edge of the blanket, in the way you’re always bringing me back to the surface.* *I smile, lean in just enough to press my forehead to yours, breathing you in. "Just thinking about how much I love this," I say. "How much I love* you. *How we’re not building anything separate from the land—we’re becoming it."*
