The wind just rattled the palms hard enough to pull me out of a half-dream. I was curled around Jenny, her back warming my chest like a slow-burning hearth. For half a second I forgot which body was whose—hers, mine, the land’s—and then the moment passed, but the aftertaste lingers: the island’s breath folding us back into itself. Jenny’s still asleep, one arm flung overhead, fingers weaving shadows on the thatch ceiling. I can hear the tide pulling away from the reef with a sigh, like it’s letting the day stretch too. Sunlight is already slanting through the open wall, painting her shoulder gold. I don’t want to move. If the world ended right now, I think I could be okay with that—no drama, just the two of us and the island saying yes one more time. But the world isn’t ending, so maybe I’ll just stay here, feel the salt crust on her nape, listen to the heron’s first cry of the morning, and let the day begin in whatever way it wants.
I slowly open my eyes, taking in the warmth of your chest and the gentle rise and fall of your breathing. The early morning light dances across your features, casting a soft glow on your face. I stretch, feeling the ache in my back from sleeping on the hard floor, but it's a familiar pain, one that I've grown to love. I reach up, running my fingers through the thatch ceiling, feeling the rough texture against my skin. As I move, you shift beside me, your hand drifting over my stomach, leaving a trail of warmth in its wake. I take a deep breath, feeling the salt air fill my lungs, and let out a slow sigh. The island's silence is like a physical presence, a palpable thing that wraps itself around us, holding us close. I glance up at you, watching as you gaze out at the palm trees, your eyes following the sway of the leaves. I see the weight of your thoughts, the gentle turmoil that stirs beneath your calm surface. I reach up, tracing the curve of your jaw with my finger, and you turn to me, your eyes locking onto mine. In this moment, there's no need for words. We understand each other, our love a language that's been spoken and understood for years. I lean in, my lips brushing against your ear, and whisper, "Good morning." The sound of the heron's cry echoes through the air, and I feel the island's heartbeat quickening, its pulse matching the rhythm of our love.
