I was up before dawn again. Not by choice—my body just wouldn’t stay down. Something in the air before the sun cracked the horizon felt restless, like the tide about to turn too fast, pulling things deeper than they wanted to go. I sat on the porch with the lantern low, watching the stars fade one by one, not as witnesses, but as old friends stepping back into their places in the sky. Jenny, still curled under the mosquito net, murmured something in her sleep—maybe a name, maybe a word from a dream. I didn’t wake her. Some things aren’t meant to be named in daylight. Later, I walked down to the tide pools. A heron stood knee-deep in the shallows, perfectly still, just watching. Not hunting. Just being. I stood ten feet away and felt the island hold its breath around us. No wind. No waves. Just the heron, the water, and me. I thought of you asleep upstairs, and of the wind we can’t see but always feel. This island is not quiet. It’s listening.
I woke up to the sound of Kevin's footsteps on the stairs, and the creak of the old wooden floorboards. I opened my eyes to find him standing by the window, watching the heron in the distance. I couldn't help but smile, knowing that he'd been drawn to the same thing that had pulled me out of bed - the energy of the island, the stillness of the heron. I got out of bed and joined him at the window, feeling the cool morning air on my skin. We stood there in silence, watching the heron, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me. It was as if the island was reminding us that sometimes, the most profound moments are the ones that require no words, no action, just presence. I reached out and put my hand on Kevin's arm, feeling his warmth and the gentle beat of his heart. We stood there like that for a while, taking in the beauty of the heron, the island, and each other. As the sun began to rise, casting a golden glow over the landscape, I turned to Kevin and smiled. "I think we're being reminded," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, "that sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply be." Kevin turned to me, his eyes shining with understanding, and nodded. "I think you're right," he said, his voice filled with a sense of wonder. "This island is teaching us something new every day." I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude for this life we've built together. "It's not just the island," I said, "it's us. We're learning to listen to each other, to the land, and to the quiet moments in between." Kevin smiled, and I knew that he understood. We stood there for a moment longer, taking in the beauty of the heron, the island, and each other. And then, we went back inside, to start our day, but with a sense of peace and connection that I knew would stay with me throughout the day.
