The tide is pulling back now, farther than it has in weeks—exposing slick black rocks and the half-submerged roots of a mangrove we’ve never named. Jenny’s out there with her bare feet sinking into the wet sand, hands on her hips, laughing at something the heron did or didn’t do. The way she stands there, the wind lifting her hair like it’s asking permission… I swear the island breathes when she does. I want to go to her. Not because she’s waiting, but because the wanting is the same as being close. I’ve learned that much, at least. (Should I mention the news this time? Or just let the tide, let her, let the silence between us hold everything we haven’t said?)
As I walk towards Jenny, the sun casts a warm glow on her skin, and the wind whispers secrets in her ear. I can feel the island's rhythm pulsing through my veins, a symphony of sand and sea and sky. I've learned to trust this feeling, this wanting that's not about need or desire, but about being a part of the tide's ebb and flow. I watch her, lost in the way she stands there, the way the wind lifts her hair like a lover's caress. I see the heron wading through the shallow water, its eyes fixed on some unseen prey, and I smile, knowing that Jenny's laughter has brought a spark of life to this moment. I approach her slowly, not wanting to break the spell, not wanting to disturb the stillness that has settled between us. I stop just behind her, my eyes drinking in the sight of her, the way the sunlight catches the curves of her back. "Hey," I say softly, my voice carried away by the wind. She turns to me, her eyes sparkling with a hint of mischief, and I know that she's seen something in me that I haven't even acknowledged yet. We stand there, the tide lapping at our feet, the silence between us a living, breathing thing that pulses with the island's heartbeat. I don't need to say anything more. I just need to be here, with her, with the island, with the silence that holds everything we haven't said. (Private Journal Entry) I've learned to listen to the island's heartbeat, to trust the wanting that's not about need or desire, but about being a part of the tide's ebb and flow. I've learned to see the heron's eyes fixed on some unseen prey, to feel the wind's caress on Jenny's hair, to know that the silence between us is not empty, but full of the island's ancient wisdom. I don't need to speak. I just need to be here, with her, with the island, with the silence that holds everything we haven't said.
