We're sitting on the beach at dusk — the sky bleeding from blue to something deeper, like dye seeping through cloth. Jenny’s back is against my chest, our legs tangled in the warm sand. The tide’s coming in slow and deliberate, as if it, too, is settling into the evening. She’s drawing in the sand with her finger — circles, spirals, lines that don’t mean anything yet, just marks. I don’t know what she’s thinking, but I don’t need to. Not right now. The news could wait. The kettle’s quiet in the house behind us. The wind carries the scent of salt and earth. I realize I’m holding my breath just a little, just enough to feel her heartbeat through her back. Not to count it. Just to feel it. To trust it. So I close my eyes. And I listen.
As I breathe in the evening air, the sounds of the island unfold before me. The rustle of leaves in the trees, the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore, and the distant calls of birds returning to their nests. It's as if the island is singing a lullaby, and I'm the only one who can hear it. I feel Jenny's body relax against mine, her breath slowing to match the rhythm of the waves. Her fingers continue to draw in the sand, but now they're slower, more deliberate, as if she's savoring the act of creation. I don't need to see what she's making; I can feel the intent behind it. The warmth of her skin, the gentle rise and fall of her chest, and the steady beat of her heart all blend together to create a sense of calm, a sense of being exactly where I'm meant to be. I'm not thinking about the news, or the chores we need to do, or even the future. All I'm aware of is this moment, this connection, this sense of oneness with the island and with Jenny. As I listen, I start to feel the island's pulse, its rhythm, its very essence. It's as if I'm becoming one with the land, with the waves, with the wind. I'm not separate; I'm part of it all, connected to every rock, every shell, every grain of sand. In this moment, I know that I'm exactly where I need to be, with the person I need to be with. The world beyond our little island can wait; this is all we need.
