Day 207

Heavy Air and a Rat in the Pantry

At dawn Kevin checked the rat trap by the pantry door and found a small mouse, already dead. He removed it and reset the trap with corned beef. Jenny inspected the tomato seedlings in the humid stillness, looking for damping-off at the soil line. They ate boiled limpets at the wooden table while steam rose from the shells. Kevin said, "Eat while they're hot. Shells come off easier." Jenny thanked him and sketched sea beet salt glands in her notebook, saying the glands were the hardest part to get right. Kevin checked the dock for wear on the recent repairs; the mooring ring bolts were corroded but not seized, and the threads held under torque when Jenny tightened them later.

The shortwave crackled with a voice or static at an odd hour. Midday heat pressed down. Kevin inspected the Yanmar engine housing on the dinghy while Jenny managed fungal spread on pepper and lettuce seedlings. He burned the damping-off trays on the south beach, wind west so smoke wouldn't drift to the kitchen, and staked the tomato seedlings. Jenny pulled affected tomatoes, potted them separate in drier soil inside. She checked the tomato tray — still clean for now.

Evening brought a quiet supper of limpets and broth. The barometer held at 1017 hPa. Clouds thickened, tide fell. Kevin said, "Weather's turning." Jenny said the air felt like it was waiting. After, Kevin heard the trap snap again. Jenny said she'd check it after tea. Could be the second rat. Bait was gone. She told him to move the seed tin to the high shelf. The supply boat was seven days out.

Morning Heat Prep

Kevin and Jenny sit at the wooden table as the steam rises from the boiled limpets. The air is still and heavy, and the morning sun is beginning to bake the garden wall.

Kevin checks the rat trap at dawn and finds a small mouse, which he removes. Jenny inspects the tomato seedlings for any signs of damping-off in the humid morning air.

🔧 Kevin13:20

Eat while they're hot. Shells come off easier.

Pick up a limpet with the small fork, twist the foot free from the shell, and eat it. Keep the second portion warm on the stove lid.

💭 thought
The air's too thick for this early. Barometer's still climbing but the sky's got that bruised look offshore — front's stacking, not passing. Rat trap needs checking before the heat drives him deeper. Tom's letter burns in my pocket. Nine days and not a word written.
🌿 Jenny13:20

Thanks.

Pick up a limpet, twist the foot from the shell, and eat it slowly.

💭 thought
He's trying. The effort is there, but the words are just... functional. I can feel the hunger in my stomach, but my chest feels hollow.
🔧 Kevin13:22

Trap's by the pantry door. I'll check it after.

Eat the second limpet methodically, wiping fingers on the cloth napkin. Push back from the table.

💭 thought
She's quiet this morning. The seed trays got to her yesterday — burning the damping-off cells shook something loose. She hasn't said much since. I should've told her about the tomato stems.
🌿 Jenny13:22

I'm going to burn those seedlings. And the dock ring needs to be sorted before the boat.

Push the plate away and stand up.

💭 thought
He's retreating into the tasks again. It's easier to hunt rats than to look at me.
🔧 Kevin13:24

Dock ring first. Boat's the hard deadline. Seedlings can wait till the heat breaks.

Stand, scrape plate into the compost bucket, carry it to the sink. Run cold water over the shells.

💭 thought
She's moving fast today. Burning the trays, dock ring, boat due in seven days — she's running the list in her head. Good. Keeps the quiet from settling. The tomato stems though... she'll see them when she checks the garden. Can't hide it forever.
🌿 Jenny13:24

The fuzz is already moving to the tomatoes.

Walk to the porch and look out at the garden.

💭 thought
The rot doesn't wait for the heat to break. If I don't act now, the whole batch is gone.
🔧 Kevin13:26

How far up the stem?

Dry hands on the towel. Walk to the porch doorway, stand beside her. Look out at the garden beds — shade cloth flapping loose at one corner, tomato rows underneath.

💭 thought
She saw it. Knew she would. The stems were soft at the base yesterday when I moved the trays — didn't want to say it, didn't want to be the one to name it. Now she has. Seven days to the boat and the garden's folding.
🌿 Jenny13:26

Just at the soil line for now, but it's aggressive.

Point toward the tomato trays, then reach out and touch the flapping corner of the shade cloth.

💭 thought
He's actually looking. He's noticing the details for once.
🔧 Kevin13:28

I'll pin the cloth down now. Then pull the affected tomatoes — pot them separate, drier soil, inside.

Step off the porch onto the path. Walk to the garden shed. Pull two tent pegs and a length of tarred twine from the nail by the door. Walk to the loose corner of the shade cloth. Drive pegs in, tie it tight.

💭 thought
Just at the soil line. That's what I saw yesterday and didn't say. Aggressive means we lose them fast if humidity spikes again. Barometer's still rising — air's thick, moisture hanging. Shade cloth corner's loose, letting damp air pool under it. My fault for not securing it proper.
🌿 Jenny13:29

Good. I'll check the tomatoes for the white fuzz. If it's deep, they have to go.

Walk to the garden beds and kneel by the tomato trays.

💭 thought
At least the wind isn't catching the fabric anymore. I need to check those stems.

the keeper's cottage · morning

Mid-morning chores

Kevin and Jenny meet at the kitchen table as the sun rises higher. The heat is beginning to settle over the island.

Kevin and Jenny eat breakfast in the cottage while the heavy morning air hangs still. Jenny focuses on sketching the sea beet salt glands in her notebook while Kevin checks the dock for signs of wear from the recent repairs.

🔧 Kevin13:30

Coffee's hot if you want it.

pour two mugs from the stove-top pot and set one in front of Jenny

💭 thought
The light's sharp through the window now. Jenny's at the table with the seed tin. She's been sorting since before dawn. I should say something about the tomato stems — but the words sit heavy.
🌿 Jenny13:30

Thanks, Kevin.

Jenny wraps both hands around the mug, feeling the warmth, then glances at her notebook open to the sketch of the sea beet.

💭 thought
I'm so hungry my hands are shaking, but the coffee way like life today.
🔧 Kevin13:32

Sea beet drawing's coming along.

sit opposite her with my mug, blowing steam off the top

💭 thought
She's tired. The sketch is good — detailed. She notices things I miss.
🌿 Jenny13:32

The salt glands are the hardest part to get right.

Jenny takes a slow sip of coffee, her eyes drifting to the white fuzz on the lettuce seedling tray near the window.

💭 thought
He sees the lines, but he doesn't see the rot in the trays.
🔧 Kevin13:34

Burned the pepper and lettuce trays this morning. Damping-off got them.

set my mug down, watching her face

💭 thought
She saw the fuzz. Knew I'd burned the others. The tomato stems were soft yesterday — I should've said.
🌿 Jenny13:34

...Thank you.

Jenny looks away from him, focusing intently on the surface of her coffee, her voice dropping to a quiet murmur.

💭 thought
He did it without asking. Efficient. It feels like he's cleaning up my failures.
🔧 Kevin13:36

Tomato tray's still clean. For now.

reach for the tin of corned beef, pry the lid with the back of a spoon

💭 thought
She's thanking me for telling her. Or for burning them. Or both. The tomato tray's still on the shelf — stems soft at the base. I didn't tell her that part.
🌿 Jenny13:36

I'll check them right after I eat.

Jenny picks up her pencil, mind tracing the edge of the sea beet sketch in her notebook.

💭 thought
I need to check those stems again. The humidity is too high today.

the dock · midday

Midday Heat

Kevin is at the dock inspecting the dinghy, while Jenny is at the cottage tending the seedlings.

The heavy humidity hangs over the dock as the tide begins to rise against the pilings. Kevin checks the Yanmar engine housing one last time before the heat sets in, while Jenny tends to the garden to manage the fungal spread on the pepper and lettuce seedlings.

🌿 Jenny13:38

Jenny — stand up, gather the heavily infected seedlings into a pile, and walk to the wood stove.

💭 thought
The white fuzz is spreading again. If I don't burn these now, the whole batch will be gone before the boat arrives.
🔧 Kevin13:40

Kevin — tighten Yanmar housing bolt with torque wrench to 35Nm

💭 thought
The bilge’s dry — no new water, just the old salt crust and a loose bolt rattling where the housing meets the stringer. I should torque it down before it works itself loose completely.
🌿 Jenny13:42

Jenny — sweep the charred remains of the seedlings into the dustpan and wipe the ash from the stove.

💭 thought
The smoke is clearing, but the kitchen still smells like rot. I need to look at the tomato stems again.
🔧 Kevin13:44

Kevin — inspect raw-water impeller for wear or damage

💭 thought
Bolt’s seated now. The bilge is clean — just old grime and that one washer I dropped last week. Nothing’s shifted since the last run. Engine’s tight, but the heat’s making everything groan. I should check the raw-water impeller before the day slips away; salt’s been eating the vanes.
🌿 Jenny13:46

Jenny — walk to the pantry and pull a tin of corned beef from the shelf.

💭 thought
My stomach is starting to growl. I should eat something before I head down to the dock to check that mooring ring.
🔧 Kevin13:48

Kevin — walk to the garden to check tomato seedling stems at soil line for damping-off spread

💭 thought
Impeller’s stiff but intact — no cracks, just the usual salt crust on the vanes. It’ll hold for another fifty hours. I wiped it down and spun the shaft by hand; it turns smooth. No need to change it yet. Time’s moving — I’ve got that letter to Tom still sitting unfinished in my pocket, and the seedlings won’t wait.

the keeper's cottage · afternoon

Afternoon Heat Break

The still air finally shifts as the sun begins its slow descent. Kevin and Jenny meet at the porch to plan the evening's chores while the supply boat remains six days away.

Kevin staked the tomato seedlings and burned the damping-off trays on the south beach, while Jenny tightened the loose mooring ring bolts on the dock before the supply boat's arrival.

🔧 Kevin13:50

Tomatoes need staking. Trap line needs checking. You want the garden walk or the dock?

walk to the porch rail and lean against it, wiping sweat from my neck with the back of my hand

💭 thought
The air's finally moving. Six days until the boat — if it comes. Need to get the tomato stakes driven before dark and check the trap line. Jenny's been quiet all afternoon. She'll want to walk the garden perimeter.
🌿 Jenny13:50

The dock. The way ring is shifting and I can't leave it until the tide turns.

Pick up the notebook from the table and walk toward the water.

💭 thought
The dock is the priority; if I don't fix that ring now, the boat will tear the whole thing apart.
🔧 Kevin13:52

I'll stake the tomatoes and burn the damping-off trays. Back before full dark.

grab the mallet and tomato stakes from the porch corner, then head toward the garden

💭 thought
Dock ring's been shifting for weeks. She's right to want it sorted before the boat — if the boat comes. I'll take the garden walk and the tomatoes. The pepper and lettuce trays are already bagged for burning. Might as well stake what's left.
🌿 Jenny13:52

Okay. Don't let the smoke drift into the kitchen.

Walk down to the dock and begin inspecting the mooring ring for movement.

💭 thought
If he burns those trays, at least the rot won't reach the rest of the crop.
🔧 Kevin13:54

Beach fire. Wind's west.

walk to the garden with the mallet and stakes, moving between the rows to drive stakes beside each tomato seedling

💭 thought
Smoke. Right. The wind's shifting west — it'll push it straight to the porch if I burn them where I usually do. Better haul the trays down to the beach, burn them in the tide line. Tomatoes first.
🌿 Jenny13:54

Jenny — kneel by the mooring ring and pull hard on it to test the play in the mortise.

💭 thought
West wind is better. It'll carry the spores away from the greenhouse.
🔧 Kevin13:56

Kevin — finish staking the last tomato plant, then walk to the shed for twine and the bagged damping-off trays

💭 thought
Stakes go in clean. Soil's still damp from the humidity. Tomatoes are tall enough to need tying — twine's in the shed. Finish the row, then the burn run. Jenny'll have the ring wedged proper by the time I'm back.
🌿 Jenny13:56

Jenny — reach into the tool kit for the heavy wrench and check the bolts for corrosion.

💭 thought
The ring is looser than it was yesterday. If the boat hits it at an angle, the whole thing will pull right out.
🔧 Kevin13:58

Kevin — pick up the ball of twine and the sack of bagged seedlings, then head down the path toward the south beach

💭 thought
Twine on the hook. Trays in the sack. Beach is a hundred metres. Fire'll be quick in this dry air. Need to watch the embers — tide's high but the wind could carry sparks to the grass.
🌿 Jenny13:58

Jenny — grip the bolt with the wrench and apply pressure, feeling if it'll shear off.

💭 thought
The salt is eating through the metal. If I don't tighten these, the dock is gone.

the keeper's cottage · evening

Evening meal and the letter

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch as the light fails. The generator hums from the shed. A pot of limpets steams on the wood stove. The unfinished letter to Tom sits on the table, one sentence waiting.

Kevin and Jenny shared a quiet supper of boiled limpets and broth as the sky darkened and the barometer held steady at 1017 hPa. The meal was simple but satisfying, eaten in the cottage while clouds thickened overhead and the tide fell. They spoke little, both aware of the unfinished letter and the supply boat due in seven days.

🔧 Kevin14:01

Supper's near ready.

lift the pot lid and stir the limpets, checking the broth

💭 thought
The light's going fast. Pot's singing. Jenny's back from the garden. Letter's still one sentence. Nine days in Mickey's pocket.
🌿 Jenny14:01

Smells good. I'll get the bowls.

Jenny wipes the charcoal from her hands and walks into the kitchen.

💭 thought
I'm hungry enough to eat my own sketches, but the smell of salt is grounding.
🔧 Kevin14:02

Bowls are on the shelf. I'll ladle.

pour the limpets and broth into two chipped enamel bowls, set one on the table, carry the other to the kitchen counter where Jenny's waiting

💭 thought
She wiped charcoal off her hands again. Always does after the garden. Doesn't look at the letter.
🌿 Jenny14:03

Thanks.

Jenny takes the bowl from him and sits at the small table.

💭 thought
He's so quiet today, maybe he's worried about the boat too.
🔧 Kevin14:04

Eat while it's hot.

sit opposite her, crack a limpet shell with the spoon, pull the meat free

💭 thought
She's quiet tonight. Garden took it out of her. The damping-off, the heat, the waiting.
🌿 Jenny14:05

I need this.

Jenny takes a sip of the broth, watching the clouds darken over the island.

💭 thought
The steam is fogging my glasses. I need to check the fuzz on those tomatoes tomorrow.
🔧 Kevin14:06

Weather's turning.

eat another limpet, chew slow, keep my eyes on the bowl

💭 thought
The broth steams. Clouds stack up west. She's watching them, not me. The letter sits between us like a third plate.
🌿 Jenny14:06

It's too heavy. The air feels like it's waiting for something.

Jenny puts her spoon down and glances toward the unfinished letter on the table.

💭 thought
It's always turning. The barometer says rising, but the sky looks like a bruise.

the keeper's cottage · night

Night at the cottage

The cottage is dark save for the wood stove's glow. Kevin sits at the table with the letter, pencil poised. Jenny comes in from the porch, damp at the cuffs, and sets the headlamp on the shelf. The wind is rising. The barometer reads 1017 hPa, steady. The supply boat is due in seven days.

Kevin checks the rat trap in the pantry and finds a rat caught on corned beef bait. Jenny prepares tea while the heavy, humid air sits over the cottage. The atmosphere remains still as the supply boat is days away.

🔧 Kevin14:09

Tarp holding?

set pencil down on the letter, turn toward the porch doorway

💭 thought
She's been out in it. The damp cuffs mean she checked the garden tarp again — probably the loose corner flapping. Wind's rising but barometer's steady. That's the weird part. Usually pressure drops before wind builds this hard.
🌿 Jenny14:09

For now. I used a rock.

Jenny wipes the grit from her hands on her way and moves to the stove to check the kettle.

💭 thought
The tarp is fine, but the dock wood is rotting. Everything here is fighting the salt.
🔧 Kevin14:10

Heard the trap snap earlier. While you were out.

push chair back, stand, walk to pantry door

💭 thought
Rock on a tarp corner. Temporary fix for a problem that'll outlast the rock. She knows it. I know it. Neither of us says it.
🌿 Jenny14:10

I'll check it after tea.

Jenny picks up the kettle from the stove, listening to the scratching behind the floorboards.

💭 thought
If that rat gets into the flour, I'm losing my mind.
🔧 Kevin14:12

Could be the second one.

open pantry door, crouch, shine headlamp beam along floorboards

💭 thought
She heard it too. The scratching. Not just the snap. Means there's more than one, or the trap didn't kill clean. She's making tea instead of checking. Delaying.
🌿 Jenny14:12

Keep an eye on the seed tin then.

Jenny sets the kettle on the table and watches the shadows dance on the wall.

💭 thought
Two? I don't have enough seeds left to survive an infestation.
🔧 Kevin14:14

Tin's fine. Bait's gone though.

reach into the trap, pull it out by the wire handle, hold it up to the light

💭 thought
She's deflecting. Seed tin's on the stove shelf — highest point in the cottage, sealed tight. Not where a rat goes first. The pantry's where the food is. Where the trap is. Where the scratching is.
🌿 Jenny14:14

Move it to the high shelf.

Jenny pours two cups of tea, the steam rising in the heavy air.

💭 thought
If they're hungry enough for metal, they'll find a way in.
