Day 354
Limpets, Sketches, and a Falling Barometer
Dawn found the barometer at 1003 hPa and rising. Kevin checked the dinghy's forward spring line while Jenny sorted heirloom seeds on the bench, her ankle throbbing. They shared corned beef broth on the porch. "Barometer's at 1003 and still dropping. Supply boat ETA holds at 1400 if the weather window holds," Kevin said. Jenny told him to check the salt-spray on the rigging. "Rigging's fine. Sit down before you fall down," he replied. She ate slowly, glancing at the first aid kit.

At low tide they moved to the north tide pools. Kevin took the lower channel, Jenny the sea beets on the rocks. "Watch the green slick on the north face. Took a chunk out of my boot last week," he warned. She struggled on the unstable terrain; her notebook smudged. Kevin filled a bucket with limpets from shaded faces. "Bucket's full. Got the big ones off the shaded faces like you said," he said. Back at the cottage, Jenny treated her swollen ankle with vinegar and salt. Kevin fired the skillet. "Two minutes in the fat, then the vinegar splash at the end."
Rain fell steadily, filling the water tank to the brim — about twenty-five litres gained. They ate boiled limpets, corned beef, and sea beet. Jenny sketched through the meal: leaf margins, salt gland spacing, the base gripping stone, crystalline salt structures drawn with a shaky hand. "Eat first. Sketch after," Kevin said. A fish run moved through the shallows off the dock. Kevin checked the cottage lashings, generator oil, and radio coax. The barometer fell again to 1003 hPa as cloud thickened. "Radio check at 0600. If he's coming, we'll hear him. If not, we wait."
Scenes
the dock · dawnPre-arrival Prep
Kevin checks the tension on the dinghy's mooring line while the tide laps the pilings. Jenny sorts the last of the dry heirloom seeds on the bench, watching the barometer for any further drops.
Kevin and Jenny shared a breakfast of corned beef broth on the cottage porch while the barometer held at 1003 hPa and rising. Kevin checked the dinghy's forward spring line and scanned the western horizon for the supply boat. Jenny ate slowly, her ankle throbbing, and glanced at the first aid kit.
Barometer's at 1003 and still dropping. Supply boat ETA holds at 1400 if the weather window holds.
Check the dinghy's forward spring line tension, then walk back to the cottage porch to scan the western horizon.
💭 thought
Check the salt-spray on the rigging while you're out there. The wind is picking up.
Set down the pencil and rub the swollen own, wincing at the throb.
💭 thought
Rigging's fine. Sit down before you fall down.
Turn back toward the cottage, grab the galvanized bucket from under the leaking shutter, and set it on the porch bench beside her.
💭 thought
I'm fine. Just hungry.
Lean back against the bench and look at the bucket, then glance toward the first aid kit.
💭 thought
Broth's on the stove. Corned beef tin in the cupboard. Eat while it's hot.
Lift the pot lid, ladle a bowl, and set it on the bench beside her with a spoon.
💭 thought
Thanks.
Take the bowl and blow on the broth, watching the steam rise into the damp air.
💭 thought
Radio check at 1200. If the boat's not raised by then, I'm taking the dinghy out to meet her.
Lean against the porch post, eyes on the western horizon, hand resting on the radio pouch at my belt.
💭 thought
Don't be a hero, Kevin. If the ceiling drops, stay put.
Eat a slow spoonful of broth and glance at the barometer.
💭 thought
the dock · morningLow tide at the tide pools
The tide has turned and fallen far enough to expose the north tide pools. Kevin stands at the dock's edge with a bucket and net, Jenny beside him leaning on a driftwood staff. The water is calm, the sky brightening. They move toward the rocks together, the supply boat still hours away.
Kevin successfully harvested a large quantity of limpets from the lower channel. Jenny attempted to sketch the sea beet morphology but struggled with the unstable terrain and her ankle, resulting in a smudged notebook and poor data.
Take the upper shelf. I'll work the channel.
walk toward the tide pools with bucket and net
💭 thought
I'll stick to the sea beets.
limp slowly toward the rocky shelf, clutching the notebook to my chest.
💭 thought
Watch the green slick on the north face. Took a chunk out of my boot last week.
step onto the lower rocks, net ready, bucket hooked on belt
💭 thought
I'll keep my eyes down.
crouch low on a flat rock, opening the notebook to the sketch of the sea beet's morphology.
💭 thought
Kevin — wade into the channel, probing the overhang with the net
💭 thought
Jenny — lean forward on the staff and carefully sketch the leaf margin of a sea beet cluster, noting the exact spacing of the salt glands.
💭 thought
Kevin — work the net blade under the overhang, prying gently
💭 thought
Easy with the edge, the roots are shallow.
hold the pencil over the paper, watching the cell structure of the plant as he works.
💭 thought
Not my first tide pool.
slide the net flat under the limpet cluster, levering slow and level
💭 thought
Just don't break the whole cluster.
sketch a quick Detail of the sea beet's base, noting the way it grips the stone.
💭 thought
the tide pools · middayThe High Tide Retreat
Kevin is at the tide pools and Jenny is on the north cliffs.
Kevin headed to the tide pools during the ebb tide to gather limpets for the evening meal. Jenny ascended the northern cliffs to monitor the horizon and document local flora, despite the aching ankle on the steep terrain.
Kevin — carry bucket of limpets up from the tide pools toward the cottage
💭 thought
Dammit.
Close the notebook sharply and lean head back against the rock, closing eyes.
💭 thought
Kevin — walk up the path from the tide pools to the cottage garden, bucket in hand
💭 thought
Jenny — slowly shift position to inspect the ankle, checking the color and heat of the skin.
💭 thought
Kevin — set the bucket of limpets down on the kitchen table, fill the cast iron pot with water, and set it on the stove to boil
💭 thought
Jenny — grip the rock to haul myself up, testing the ankle's weight-bearing capacity.
💭 thought
the keeper's cottage · afternoonEvening Meal Preparation
Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun begins to dip, the gathered limpets ready for the cast-iron skillet.
Kevin gathered a large harvest of limpets from the low tide pools and prepared the kitchen fire. Jenny treated her swollen ankle with a vinegar and salt solution to manage the inflammation and infection. They met in the cottage to eat as the tide began to turn.
You got a lot of them. Good. I'm starving.
Limp slowly toward the kitchen table and set the notebook down, carefully avoiding any sudden movements with the left leg.
💭 thought
Bucket's full. Got the big ones off the shaded faces like you said.
Set the bucket on the stone floor by the stove and lift the cast-iron skillet onto the wood burner, letting it heat while I pull the knife from my belt to start cleaning the limpets.
💭 thought
Just don't overcook them. I want them chewy, not rubber.
Sink into the kitchen chair with a heavy sigh and reach for the jar of vinegar and the salt on the counter.
💭 thought
Won't. Two minutes in the fat, then the vinegar splash at the end.
Slice the dark foot off each limpet shell, dropping the meat into a bowl and discarding the black gut sack, working fast while the skillet comes up to heat.
💭 thought
I'm going to fix my leg. Don't... just let me get this sorted before the food's ready.
Carefully peel back the fabric strips of the ankle brace, wincing as the swollen skin sticks to the cloth.
💭 thought
Take your time. Skillet's hot. I'll have them done when you're ready.
Scoop a generous spoonful of corned beef fat into the smoking skillet, let it shimmer, then drop in the limpet meat in a single layer, watching the edges curl white.
💭 thought
I'm not taking my time. I'm doing it now.
Dip a clean cloth into the vinegar and salt mixture, then press it firmly against the infected area of the ankle.
💭 thought
—
Flip each limpet with the knife tip, cooking the other side fifteen seconds, then splash the vinegar-salt mix over them and kill the heat.
💭 thought
the keeper's cottage · eveningEvening Meal
The smell of searing limpets and corned beef fills the cottage. The tide is coming back in, lapping against the rocks where Kevin worked.
The rain continues steadily, filling the water tank to its maximum capacity. Kevin prepares a meal of boiled limpets and corned beef with sea beet, while Jenny sits at the table sketching sea beet morphology in her notebook while managing her swollen ankle.
Food's ready. Come eat while it's hot.
plate up two portions of limpets and corned beef, set one on the table for Jenny, take the other to the porch step and eat watching the channel
💭 thought
I'm coming. Just a minute.
Jenny winces as she shifts off her weight, then limps to the kitchen table and sits down heavily.
💭 thought
Take your time. The pan's off the heat.
slide the second plate closer to her, pour coffee from the pot on the stove, set the mug down without clatter
💭 thought
Thanks.
Jenny picks up her fork but opens the notebook instead, sketching the intricate salt glasses of a sea beet leaf with a shaky hand.
💭 thought
Eat first. Sketch after.
pick up my own fork, start on the limpets, chew slow and watch the steam rise from her plate
💭 thought
I know.
Jenny sighs and finally takes a bite of the corned beef, chewing slowly as she stares at the rain hitting the window.
💭 thought
Radio check at 0600. If he's coming, we'll hear him. If not, we wait.
finish my plate, wipe the fork clean on a rag, stand and stretch the stiffness from my back
💭 thought
I'll be ready.
Jenny sets her pencil down and rubs her swollen ankle, wincing at the heat of the skin.
💭 thought
I'll get the cold pack from the cool box. Keep eating.
walk to the cool box, retrieve the warming cold pack, wrap it in a clean cloth, bring it back and set it on the table beside her
💭 thought
Thanks, Kevin.
Jenny reaches for the pack, pressing it gently against her ankle and letting out a long, shaky breath.
💭 thought
the keeper's cottage · nightEvening Quietude
Kevin and Jenny are together in the small kitchen as the lantern flickers. The sound of the rain is the only constant.
Kevin checked the cottage lashings and generator oil while Jenny sketched sea beet morphology and tended her ankle. The barometer continued falling to 1003 hPa as cloud cover thickened overhead. A fish run moved through the shallows off the dock in the high tide.
Water's to the brim. Tank's sealed.
wipe hands on a rag and move to the porch door to check the lashings
💭 thought
Good. Don't let the wind catch the door.
Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, reaching for her pencil to shade the salt own.
💭 thought
Door's braced. Two-by-four and the tool bag. Not going anywhere.
step onto the porch and check the generator lashings by flashlight
💭 thought
Make sure the radio stays dry.
Jenny presses the pencil hard against the paper, sketching the crystalline structure of a salt gland to ignore the throb.
💭 thought
Coax is taped and the new insulator's holding. Aerial's sound.
pull the porch door shut behind me and sweep the flashlight over the generator, ratchet straps, and radio mast base
💭 thought
Check the generator oil one last time.
Jenny pulls her notebook close and winces as she adjusts the swollen ankle, testing the vinegar soak.
