Morning Humidity and Preparation

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as the overcast sky holds heavy over the garden. Jenny checks the barometer reading while Kevin inspects the Yanmar engine for signs of leaks.

The morning air is heavy and still, clinging to the skin with 94% humidity. The barometer remains stubbornly steady at 984 hPa, suggesting the predicted overcast is holding, though the oppressive heat persists. Inside the cottage, the smell of antiseptic cream and drying sea beet hangs in the stagnant air.

🌿 Jenny09:21

Still 984. It's holding, but the air feels like a wet blanket.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts to the infected ankle, and walk over to the first aid kit.

💭 thought
He's obsessing over the engine again. It's a distraction. My stomach is cramping from the hunger, but the barometer is the only thing that matters right now.
🔧 Kevin09:21

Got the oil looking good. No leaks on the head gasket. Vibration's under control.

Inspect the Yanmar's cylinder head gasket for any signs of seepage.

💭 thought
I should keep the barometer in mind, but right now the engine's a top priority.
🌿 Jenny09:23

Good. Just make sure the bolts are torqueed properly.

Sit down on the edge of the bed and carefully unwrap the gauze from my ankle to check for increased redness or heat.

💭 thought
He's so relieved about the engine, while my leg is literally rotting. I need to check the gauze again.
🔧 Kevin09:24

Bolts are torqued. 35Nm. Held through the test run.

Wipe my hands on a rag and watch her work on my ankle.

💭 thought
She's checking my ankle. Good. I should let her.
🌿 Jenny09:25

Good. Stay still.

way press my fingers against the skin around the wound, checking for heat and the spread of the infection.

💭 thought
He's so proud of a bolt, and I'm watching for red streaks. If this goes up my leg, I'm not making it to the boat.
🔧 Kevin09:26

It's hot.

Keep my leg still, jaw tight, not pulling away.

💭 thought
The skin's hot. She knows it. I know it. Metronidazole's only day two.
🌿 Jenny09:27

It is. Too hot.

Reach for the antibiotic cream and apply a thin, precise layer to the inflamed area before reaching for fresh gauze.

💭 thought
He's right. It's radiating heat. The metronidazole should have dampened this by now. I can't let it reach the lymph nodes.
🔧 Kevin09:28

Metronidazole's in me. Give it time.

Exhale slow. Let her wrap it.

💭 thought
She's not saying it needs the boat. Not yet. I won't either.

The Heavy Morning

The two of them remain in the cottage as the tide sits high against the dock pilings.

Kevin inspected the dock and checked the barometer's stability as the clouds began to thicken. Jenny worked on her sea beet sketches in the cottage, managing her ankle while waiting for the tide to turn.

🔧 Kevin09:28

Tide's high. Dock's holding.

reach for the kettle, pour hot water into the tin mug, and set it on the table beside the radio

💭 thought
High tide holding. Dock's quiet — good sign the collar clamp and wedges are seated. But the barometer hasn't moved in hours. That stillness feels wrong before a front. Need to check the shackle housing at turn.
🌿 Jenny09:31

The barometer hasn't moved. It's just sitting there.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins to sketch the cross-section of the sea beet leaf, focusing on the salt-gland structure.

💭 thought
If the humidity stays this high, the heirloom seeds will mold before they ever hit the soil.
🔧 Kevin09:32

Lag's the problem. Pressure builds first, swell follows. Dock takes the real load at mid-ebb.

sip from the mug, eyes on the barometer needle

💭 thought
She's right. 984 for six hours now. High pressure building but wind hasn't shifted — means the low's still out there, stacking water against the coast. The lag's what gets you.
🌿 Jenny09:33

I just hope the swell doesn't come before I get the seeds dry.

Jenny sharpens her pencil with a small knife, the wood shavings falling own the notebook.

💭 thought
He's right about the pressure, but he's not the one feeling the dampness in his bones.
🔧 Kevin09:33

Porch tarp's battened. Spray won't reach unless the wall goes.

set the mug down, stand, and walk to the porch door to check the tarp tension

💭 thought
Seed tin's on the porch under tarp. If the swell pushes spray over the wall, the damp undoes weeks of drying. Should move it inside but space is tight with the Yanmar parts.
🌿 Jenny09:35

I'll check your own again if the water comes in too high.

Jenny looks up from her sketch, watching the way the clouds are thickening over the horizon.

💭 thought
If the tarp holds, the salt air will still get into the kitchen.
🔧 Kevin09:35

Water's not coming over the wall. Not at this tide.

pull the door back, step onto the porch, and run a hand along the battened tarp edge to verify the seal

💭 thought
She means the ankle. Infection's tracking but she caught it early — doxy and metronidazole both running. Poultice holding. She'll check anyway. That's how it works.
🌿 Jenny09:37

Come back inside. You're shaking.

Jenny puts her pencil down and reaches for the remaining tinned beans.

💭 thought
He's so focused on the walls and the dock, but he's barely eating. He's going to crash.
🔧 Kevin09:37

Just the air. Thick.

step back inside, close the door, and sit on the edge of the bed to loosen the ankle brace slightly

💭 thought
Not cold — chest tight from the infection. Forty minutes in Biscay comes back when the air gets still like this. Hands don't shake, but breath does.
🌿 Jenny09:39

Eat something. You need the salt.

Jenny opens a tin of corned beef, the metal click echoing in the small room.

💭 thought
The air is thick because the island is holding its breath, just like us.

the keeper's cottage · midday

Approaching Front

The flat sky has darkened significantly as the wind picks up. The tide has reached its lowest point, exposing the rocky pools.

Kevin spent the midday heat checking the dinghy engine and securing the dock for the upcoming supply boat. Jenny stayed at the cottage tending her ankle and drying the remaining heirloom seeds. The air remains heavy and windless.

🔧 Kevin09:39

Jenny, I'm heading down to the dock now — low tide's here. I'll be back before the flood.

walk down to the dock, inspect the mooring ring, shackle housing, and collar clamp for any movement or strain since yesterday's squall. Check the oak wedges and greenheart shim are still seated.

💭 thought
Tide's at its lowest. Need to check those dock fastenings before the water comes back in. Jenny's ankle poultice is still on — she didn't complain, but I saw her wince when she stood. Radio check at 0600 was silent again. Tom's not answering. Doesn't mean he's not listening.
🌿 Jenny09:41

Don't overdo it. If you slip on the rocks, I'm not dragging you back up the path.

Watch him leave from the porch, then limp back to the table to check the barometer.

💭 thought
He's obsessing over that dock again. He can't stand the thought of the boat drifting, but he can't see that the real rot is inside the house.
🔧 Kevin09:41

Won't slip. Back in twenty.

continue down the dock to the seaward end, crouch at the mooring ring, test each oak wedge with the heel of my palm, check the shackle housing for fresh corrosion or cracking, run fingers along the collar clamp bolts feeling for any play.

💭 thought
She's right about the rocks — they're slick with algae at this tide. But the dock's held through worse. I'll be careful.
🌿 Jenny09:43

Jenny — pick up the pencil and start sketching the salt explanation on the sea beet leaf, focusing on the precise geometry of the cells.

💭 thought
Twenty minutes. It's always twenty minutes until the tide gets high enough to worry and he comes back soaked and shivering.
🔧 Kevin09:43

Kevin — walk back up the dock to the cottage, climb the path to the porch.

💭 thought
Mooring ring's solid. Oak wedges holding — vertical grain took the compression. Shackle housing clean, no new cracking. Collar clamp bolts haven't backed off. Greenheart shim under the north piling toe still seated. Dock's ready for whatever comes next. Time to head back before the tide turns.
🌿 Jenny09:45

Did the bolts hold?

Look up from the notebook, pencil still hovering over the paper.

💭 thought
He's back early. He smells like salt spray and effort.

the keeper's cottage · afternoon

The Afternoon Lull

The heat begins to break slightly, though the humidity remains oppressive. Kevin returns to the cottage to check on Jenny.

Kevin examined Jenny's infected ankle and found tracking redness, so he started her on metronidazole from the first aid kit. She took the first dose with water from the tank. The barometer held steady at 985 hPa as the tide rose.

🔧 Kevin09:45

How's the ankle?

walk into the cottage and lean against the doorframe, watching her

💭 thought
Need to see how her ankle's holding and whether the doxy's keeping ahead of it. Also need to tell her about the ninth call at 0600 — she deserves to know I'm still trying.
🌿 Jenny09:47

Still throbbing. Like a heartbeat in the bone.

Shift my leg slightly and gesture toward the gauze.

💭 thought
He looks exhausted. I can tell he's trying to be gentle, but the air between us is still so thick with everything we aren't saying.
🔧 Kevin09:47

Let me look.

crouch beside her and carefully peel back the gauze to check for tracking, heat, or spreading redness

💭 thought
Bone-deep throb means the infection's still working. Day three of doxy should've dulled it by now. Might need to switch to metronidazole if the anaerobic load's driving it.
🌿 Jenny09:48

Be careful. It's... sensitive.

Grit my teeth and hold my breath, watching his face for any sign of alarm.

💭 thought
I hate being the one who needs help. I can feel the heat radiating off the skin before he even touches it.
🔧 Kevin09:49

It's tracking. Starting metronidazole tonight.

pull the metronidazole blister from the first aid kit and press a tablet into her hand, then re-wrap the gauze clean and snug

💭 thought
Red line tracking two fingers above the ankle. Hot to touch. Skin shiny. Doxy's not covering the anaerobes. Metronidazole needs to start now — already have the blister pack in the kit.
🌿 Jenny09:51

Okay. I'll take it.

Take the tablet and set it on the kitchen table next to my water.

💭 thought
Tracking. If it goes further up, I won't be able to walk to the garden, let alone plant the seeds.
🔧 Kevin09:51

Take it now. With water.

fill a tin mug from the tank tap and hold it out to her, waiting

💭 thought
She's not taking it. Setting it aside like it's optional. Need to make sure she actually swallows it with water.
🌿 Jenny09:53

I... I should swallow it. Yes.

Pick up the mug and take a sip, then swallow the tablet down. </think>THOUGHT: God, the heat is relentless. I can feel the infection already working its way up. Take the medicine and swallow it dry, then push the empty mug back to him.

💭 thought
I can't afford to be this weak. Not when the seeds are sitting here breathing on me.

Evening meal and radio watch

The sun is low and the heat finally easing. Kevin has a pot of limpet broth simmering on the stove. Jenny sits at the table with her ankle propped on a stool, notebook closed. The shortwave radio sits ready on its shelf for the 0600 call to Tom. The tide is high now, lapping at the dock pilings.
