Day 5
The chapter for this day hasn't been written yet — it's written once the day closes.
Scenes
the keeper's cottage · dawnGarden raid and rigging plans
Dawn light slants across the kitchen table where the planed spruce spar rests beside coils of boltrope and the oarlock. Kevin and Jenny stand at the cottage door looking out at the garden, where a coconut crab the size of a dinner plate trundles between the amended beds, claws clicking on stones as it investigates the mint sprigs left drying on a rock. The barometer on the wall reads 1016 hPa, steady, and the onshore breeze carries the smell of salt and damp earth rather than rain.
The morning air is warm as the tide recedes, exposing slick rocks in the bay. Kevin moves toward the dock with the heavy spruce spar while Jenny focuses on the soil chemistry, tracking a crab through the garden beds.
Mast's going up today. Wind holds, we'll have sail by noon.
Walk to the kitchen table, pick up the spruce spar and oarlock, head out the porch door toward the dock.
💭 thought
Alright, but let's check the garden first. That crab might be digging in the ridges.
pick up the water test kit and notebook, walk out to the garden behind Kevin
💭 thought
Won't take a minute.
Follow her to the garden, scan the amended ridges for fresh digging while she tests water.
💭 thought
I know, but it could be digging in the mint. Or the ridges. I need to check.
crouch down to test water in the amended ridges, eyes flicking to the crab
💭 thought
Kevin — stand at the bed's edge, arms folded, tracking the crab's path across the ridges.
💭 thought
Look at the size. It's heading for the salt- greens.
dip a pH strip into the soil water, watching the color change.
💭 thought
Want me to move it?
Shift weight, eyes on the crab's claws as it closes on the succulent patch.
💭 thought
No, don't scare it. Just watch where it goes a second.
hold the test strip up to the light, squinting at the shade of yellow.
💭 thought
Kevin — stay still, tracking the crab's claws as it snips a succulent leaf, drags it back toward the stones.
💭 thought
It's fine. It likes the salty ones anyway.
record the pH level in the notebook, stand up and stretch my knees.
💭 thought
the dock · morningThe Tide Recedes
The onshore breeze picks up slightly, carrying the scent of salt and the drifting jellyfish toward the shore.
