Day 569

The chapter for this day hasn't been written yet — it's written once the day closes.

Scenes

the keeper's cottage · dawn

Humidity and rising pressure

Kevin sits on the floorboards meticulously brushing mold spores from the heirloom packets while the air remains heavy. Jenny sits by the window, adjusting her ankle brace and watching the grey clouds thicken further over the north ridge.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin08:35

Barometer's still dropping. Wind'll shift west by noon.

keep brushing spores from the Cherokee Purple packet, setting it aside with the clean ones

💭 thought
She's been quiet since the ankle. Watches the ridge like she's waiting for something to break. The packets on the north side of the loft — still fuzzy. I didn't tell her.
🌿 Jenny08:37

Just make sure the tin stays sealed this time. The wood is still damp inside.

Jenny sketches the pattern of the mold on the edge of the tomato packet in her notebook, her movements precise despite the tremor in her hand.

💭 thought
If the wind shifts west, the salt spray might stay off the garden, but the humidity is still too high for the tin. My ankle feels like it's being squeezed in a vice; the red lines are moving up. I need to check the vinegar solution again before the fever sets in.
🔧 Kevin08:38

Tin's sealed. Tape held. Loft boards are drier than last week.

set the cleaned Brandywine packet into the tin, press the lid down firm, run thumb around the self-amalgamating tape seal

💭 thought
Her hand shakes. She says it's the cold. I've seen the meds on the shelf — metronidazole empty, doxycycline down to two. She's not taking them on schedule.
🌿 Jenny08:39

I'll go check the water tank. The level might be lower than I thought yesterday.

Jenny limps toward the back of the cottage, wincing as the weight shifts onto her good leg.

💭 thought
If the tin stays dry, maybe the seeds won't rot before the boat comes. But my ankle is pulsing in time with my heart, and the island doesn't care about my grandmother's garden.
🔧 Kevin08:39

Overflow's the problem, not the level. Copper pipe spillway's still on the list.

wipe hands on trousers, stand, grab the crowbar from the bag by the door

💭 thought
She's avoiding the tin. Avoiding me. The tank was 397 litres at dawn — full enough to overflow with this rain. She knows. She just needs to move.
🌿 Jenny08:41

Watch out for the slippery rocks when the wind picks up.

Jenny reaches the back of the cottage and presses her hand against the cold plastic of the rain tank, listening for the hollow of water.

💭 thought
He's right about the pipe, but I'm the one who has to climb the ladder. If that tank overflows again, the garden floor will be a mud pit.
🔧 Kevin08:42

Going to the spring. Clear the intake before the silt chokes it.

step out onto the porch, pull the hood up, walk down the path toward the woods

💭 thought
She's checking by feel because she doesn't trust the gauge. Or she doesn't trust me to have checked it. Either way, her ankle takes the weight wrong and she hides the wince.
🌿 Jenny08:43

Don't stay out long, the clouds are turning fast.

Jenny turns into the kitchen, starts the water on the wood stove, and way prepping the vinegar for the seed packets.

💭 thought
If the spring is choked, the tank won't matter. I need to get that saline ready for the ankle before the heat gets too bad.
🔧 Kevin08:43

Back before the tide turns.

walk down the slick grass path toward the woods, boots sinking in the wet ground

💭 thought
She's making vinegar wash for packets I already brushed clean. Busy work. Keeps her hands off the ankle, off the radio, off the letter to Tom still in my pocket. The path to the spring turns to mud fast in this rain.
🌿 Jenny08:45

(To the empty room)

Jenny sits at the table, pulls the heirloom seed packets toward her, and begins carefully wiping the mold off the paper with a small cloth.

💭 thought
The air is getting heavy. If it rains before he gets the spring clear, the whole south will be a mess. I need to focus on these packets.

A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin rigged a temporary copper pipe and hose spillway from the water tank overflow, staking it clear of the cottage foundation. Jenny scrubbed mold from heirloom seed packets with vinegar and debrided her ankle infection with saline, noting the wound looks cleaner.

🔧 Kevin08:47

Kevin — walk to the shed, grab the scrap copper pipe and tubing cutter, return to the cottage, measure and cut a 1.2m length, bend it to slope away from the tank overflow, fit it over the weep hole, weight the end with a stone to direct flow clear

💭 thought
The tank’s still weeping. If I don’t rig that spillway today, the foundation’ll start to wash. Copper pipe’s in the shed—scrap from the generator repair. I can bend it over the knee of the old workbench, slope it away from the stone. Jenny’s ankle’s holding, but I won’t ask her to help. Not today.
🌿 Jenny08:47

Make sure the end points away from the stones.

Watch the first trickle come through the pipe, checking the angle for the slope.

💭 thought
If that water pools at the foundation, the rot will move faster than the infection. The cottage needs to stay dry.
🔧 Kevin08:49

Got it. Gonna need more length.

walk back to the shed, search for the old garden hose or more copper offcuts, return with a cracked but intact 2m length of green hose, shove it over the copper pipe end, weight it with a flat stone so it drains onto the grass slope beyond

💭 thought
She's right. The stones'll just channel it back under the foundation if I don't get the fall right. Need another half-metre of pipe, or a length of that old garden hose to carry it past the drip line.
🌿 Jenny08:49

It's enough. Just make sure it doesn't kink.

Press down on the connection to Ensure the seal is tight and watch the water flow through without leaking.

💭 thought
That's better. The water won't just back up against the stone now.
🔧 Kevin08:51

Bamboo stake'll hold the bend. Be right back.

walk to the garden, cut a 60cm length of split bamboo from the border edging, return to the tank, stake the hose in a smooth curve away from the foundation, tamp soil over the run to lock it, watch the water run clear onto the grass slope

💭 thought
Hose is soft. Kinks easy. A length of that split bamboo from the garden border'd hold the curve. Or just bury the run in a shallow trench—let the earth shape it.
🌿 Jenny08:53

Good. way check the tank level for leaks again.

Wipe the grit from my hands and walk toward the 400-litre tank.

💭 thought
The slope is actually working. If I can keep the base dry, I can actually focus on the ankle tomorrow.
🔧 Kevin08:53

Level's been steady. But I'll look.

climb the tank ladder, run fingers along the patched seam, check the overflow collar for hairline cracks, shine the headlamp into the dark water for sediment or new seepage, drop back down and report

💭 thought
Tank's been weeping at the seam where the old patch sits. Level's held at 394 for two days now—either the leak's stopped or the rain's matching it. Barometer's steady at 982. No storm coming to test it.
🌿 Jenny08:57

Sound. Good work.

Note the time on my notebook and return to the cottage.

💭 thought
Keep it simple. The tank's holding. Save my energy for the infection.

Midday check-ins and separate tasks

Kevin is at the cottage checking the shortwave for the supply boat; Jenny is in the woods gathering medicinal plants and checking snares.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin09:00

Kevin — key shortwave at 1200, log any traffic, then check spillway flow and seed tin under tarp

💭 thought
Barometer steady at 982. Good. Means the high's holding. Tom's message said two days — that puts the boat at day 571 if they're straight with me. Spillway's doing its job; foundation's dry. Seed tin's the next fight.
🌿 Jenny09:01

Stay dry, you. Just one more week.

Place the mint sprigs in the basket and begin the slow hike back to the cottage.

💭 thought
The infection is receding, but the heat is still there. I need to keep these seeds dry before the boat comes.
🔧 Kevin09:03

Kevin — hang up headphones, step onto porch, scan tree line for movement, listen for her whistle

💭 thought
Nothing on the air but static and a distant coast guard bulletin for the outer banks — gale warning north of us, not here. Spillway's running clean. Seed packets on the porch newspaper look dry, no new fuzz. Jenny's been gone a while. Woods are thick this time of year; she could be at the spring or the ridge. Not worried. Not yet.
🌿 Jenny09:05

Jenny — wipe the condensation from my brow and head toward the water tank.

💭 thought
The rain is picking up again. I need to check the tank before it gets too dark.
🔧 Kevin09:07

Kevin — pull on oilskin, grab headlamp and staff, walk the cottage perimeter checking shutters and tarp lashings while I wait

💭 thought
No sign of her. No whistle. The woods swallow sound. She said she'd check the Carex transect on the north ridge — that's a two-hour round trip if she's moving easy on the ankle. Barometer's still 982. Light's thinning faster than it should; cloud bank rolling in from the west. Spillway gurgles. Radio's quiet. I'll give her another hour before I walk the ridge line.
🌿 Jenny09:09

Jenny — trace the level in the log and check the seals for any weeping.

💭 thought
The tank is nearly full. If it rains more, I'll have to manage the overflow.
