The Rising Tide

Kevin hunches over the salt-crusted crate, prying a crowbar into the warped wood. Jenny sits on a pile of timber, her ankle propped on a crate as she watches the tide creep toward the pilings.

Kevin and Jenny attempt to open the heavy waterlogged crate that was recovered from the surf. The wood is swollen and salt-crusted, making it extremely difficult to pry apart at the dock.

🔧 Kevin01:03

Lid's stuck. Stand back.

pry the crate lid open with the crowbar

💭 thought
The wood groans — salt and time have welded the lid tight. One good heave should crack it. Jenny's watching the water rise, not the crate. Her ankle's propped high, color back in her face. Good.
🌿 Jenny01:04

Use the chisel, Kevin. The wood is swollen from the salt, it just needs leverage.

Jenny leans forward, wincing as the movement pulls on her ankle, and watches the crowbar flex.

💭 thought
He's going to snap the wood if he keeps forcing it like that.
🔧 Kevin01:05

Kevin — set the crowbar down, pick up the chisel and mallet, work the blade into the salt-crusted seam

💭 thought
She's right. Crowbar's too blunt — splitting the lid, not the seal. Chisel'll find the gap.
🌿 Jenny01:05

way with the seeds inside, I don't want grandmother's tin crushed.

Jenny watches the rhythm of the mallet, breath hitching as the wood finally begins to give.

💭 thought
That's better. Precision over brute force, every time.
🔧 Kevin01:07

Corners first. Center last.

drive the chisel into the lid's corners, splitting the swollen wood clean from the seal, then pry the lid free in sections

💭 thought
Good catch. Grandmother's tin's in there somewhere — rusted, dented, but the seeds held. I'll work the corners first, keep the center clean.
🌿 Jenny01:07

careful with the splinters, the wood is brittle.

Jenny shifts her weight, her eyes tracking the line where the lid pulls away from the base.

💭 thought
He's finally listening. The grain is splitting where it should.
🔧 Kevin01:09

Kevin — ease the chisel along the last sealed edge, guiding the lid off in one piece, then set it aside on the timber pile

💭 thought
Salt's eaten the fibers. Wood doesn't bend — it shatters. Slow now. Let the chisel do the work.
🌿 Jenny01:09

check the tin. Is it dry?

Jenny leans forward, her heart hammering against her ribs as she eyes the interior of the crate.

💭 thought
It's open. now let's see if they survived.
