Site Survey for Grandmother's Seeds (1) Day 126. The humidity is thick today and Kevin is humming something in the kitchen again, but I can't focus until this is mapped. These seeds are the only thing I have left of her, and I'm not throwing them into unyielding dirt just because I'm restless. I need to be precise. 1. Check soil pH at the leeward slope. I need to know the acidity before I even dig. If it's too alkaline from the volcanic ash, the marigold variants won't take. I'll use the litmus strips I salvaged from the herbarium—no guessing based on soil "feel." 2. Map wind-shadow zones behind the stone wall. The gusts off the channel are brutal here. I need to sketch the exact contour of the lee where the wind won't snap the stems. I'll mark the dead zones with charcoal on the rocks so I don't waste a single seed on an exposed patch. 3. Test drainage near the spring runoff. The water here moves far too fast. I need to see where the silt settles. If the soil stays waterlogged, the seeds will rot before they even wake up. I'll dig three test trenches and time the saturation rate. I can't get this wrong. I don't have enough left to try twice.
