Shelter from the rain

The rain intensifies as the tide begins to turn, forcing you to retreat to the kitchen for the night.

Kevin and Jenny spent the night at the old shrine, reading carved names from the notebook by headlamp light while rain drummed on the roof. They returned to the cottage before dawn, exhausted and hungry, and fell into a deep sleep on the cot.

Kevin — walk back to the cottage, duck inside, shake off the worst of the wet, and settle onto the cot with my boots off and the headlamp off — just dark and the sound of rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
The shrine’s stones are whispering names I can’t read, and the rain’s turning the ridge into a slick I shouldn’t be on. I’m spent — body’s done, mind’s half-drowned in the day’s static and Jenny’s quiet. Best to get under cover before the wind shifts and the tide cuts off the path.

Damn.

Sit on the edge of the cot, head in hands, and rub the dry soil from the palm of my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
My hands are shaking from the cold, and I can't stop thinking about the names on those stones. If the boat doesn't come in four days...

What'd you find?

shift on the cot to make room, reach for the water tin on the floor beside me, and hold it out without looking — just the sound of plastic on wool letting her know it's there.

💭 peek at the thought
She's carrying something heavier than wet clothes and cold dirt. The way she sits — shoulders dropped, hands moving slow — that's not fatigue. That's the weight of whatever she read on that stone, or didn't read, or didn't want to.

Just names. Old ones.

Take a long drink of water and stare at the dark corner where the notebook sits.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too tired to explain the weight of the silence or the way the wind was erasing the names.

🔧 Kevin11:42

(softly) They’re just… names. Old ones. I’m gonna read them if you want, Jenny.

open the notebook, place it on the cot beside me, and turn to the page I last stopped at. I’ll read the carved names out loud, watching her reaction.

💭 peek at the thought
The names are probably more for me than for her. I’ll read them, give her a chance to decide if she wants to keep the stone’s story or just let it stay buried. I’m tired of hidden agendas and waiting for a boat that might never come.

🌿 Jenny11:43

Go ahead.

Lean my head back against the cabin wall and listen to the rain drumming on the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If I say them out loud, they become real, maybe the island stops taking them back from me.
