The Rising Wind

Kevin and Jenny stand by the garden wall as the southeast wind picks up, whipping the salt spray. Jenny checks the moisture in the heirloom seed trays while Kevin adjusts the tension on the shade cloth over the tomatoes.

The south-east wind brings heavy spray from the reef, keeping the air humid and salty. Kevin focuses on securing the garden against the gusting, while Jenny manages the damp heirloom seeds near the stove for drying.

🌿 Jenny12:43

Tighten the corner, Kevin. The salt is going to burn the seedlings before they even break.

Jenny reaches out to touch the soil in the seed tray, her thumb checking for dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to rip that cloth right off the stakes if we don't get these trays inside before the weather turns.

🔧 Kevin12:43

Got it.

Pull the shade cloth corner taut, loop the line through the grommet twice, and tie it off hard on the wall cleat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The spray's already hitting the wall top. If I don't cinch this down now, the grommets tear and the cloth's useless.

🌿 Jenny12:44

Move the trays inside. Now. The barometer is dropping too fast.

Jenny picks up the heavy notebook and the seed trays, moving quickly toward the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
If that knot holds, we might have a chance, but the wind is getting angry today.

🔧 Kevin12:45

Right behind you.

Grab the remaining two seed trays and the heirloom tin, follow her into the cottage, set them on the kitchen table away from windows.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast. Barometer dropping fast means the southeast's going to hit harder than forecast. Trays go in, then I secure the rest.

🌿 Jenny12:47

Check the door seals. I don't want the salt everywhere.

Jenny slams the heavy door shut and slides the bolt home, then turns back to the table.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the seeds are safe for now, but I can feel the pressure in my ears— storm is coming.

🔧 Kevin12:47

On it.

Pull the rolled canvas strip from the porch pile, jam it into the door bottom gap, press it tight with the heel of my boot.

💭 peek at the thought
Door's solid but the rubber's perished at the bottom. Salt gets in there, it gets everywhere. Need to stuff it.

🌿 Jenny12:49

We're starving. I need to put the water on.

Jenny opens the seed tin, her fingers trembling slightly as she looks at the dry seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is howling through the gaps now, I can hear the roof rattling.

🔧 Kevin12:49

Kettle's on the stove. I'll get the beef.

Fill the kettle from the tank, set it on the wood stove, pull two tins of corned beef from the shelf, open them with the knife, dump both into the cast iron skillet.

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. Not from cold. The tin, the seeds, the wind — something's cracked loose. Water first. Food after. I'll put the kettle on, get the corned beef going.
