A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin used the falling tide to scout the lower rock shelf pools, successfully securing a fresh catch of limpets. Jenny focused on the heirloom seed trays inside the cottage, battling the high humidity to prevent the seedlings from molding.

🌿 Jenny20:45

It's getting too heavy in here today.

Sit on the way step and watch the rain fall on the half-weeded garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is so thick it feels like I'm breathing water. I need to move those seeds before the humidity ruins them for good.

🔧 Kevin20:45

Mm.

walk to the stove shelf and check the seed trays for mould

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The air's thick enough to wring water from. Barometer's still rising but the humidity's climbing with it — mould loves this.

🌿 Jenny20:47

They need more airflow than the stove is giving them.

Reach for my notebook and start sketching the salt glands on the sea beet to clear my head.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking them, but he doesn't see the way the leaves are curling at the edges.

Porch dries faster. Spray risk if the wind shifts southeast.

pick up the seed trays and carry them out to the porch, setting them on the bench where the air moves

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Stove shelf traps the damp even with the fire going. Porch gets the breeze but catches the salt spray on southeast. No clean answer.

🌿 Jenny20:48

Keep an eye on them if the barometer starts dropping.

Follow through with the sketch, capturing the intricate morphology of the sea beet's salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the airflow, but the salt spray will kill them if the wind actually shifts.

🔧 Kevin20:49

Won't drop till evening if the French forecast held. I'll check at dusk.

lean against the doorframe and watch the rain blur the garden, arms crossed

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's 1014 and rising. She's reading ahead — southwest swell building means spray reaches the porch. She's already thinking the next move.

🌿 Jenny20:50

If it shifts, I'm bringing them back in.

Sharpen my pencil and continue detailing the cell structure of the sea beet in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always with the forecasts. The island doesn't care about a paper map.

🔧 Kevin20:51

If.

pull the porch door mostly shut, leaving a gap for airflow, and go back inside to the radio shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She'll haul them back to the stove shelf and we'll rotate trays hourly like last time. Works, mostly. Costs sleep.

🌿 Jenny20:52

(Nothing said)

Stop sketching and focus on the sound of the rain hitting the tin roof.

💭 peek at the thought
Always an 'if'. The humidity is a physical weight on my chest.

🔧 Kevin20:53

Kevin — check the water tank gauge, then sit at the table and clean the metal file with a wire brush

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's steady. Good for the tank, bad for the garden beds — soil's already saturated. Tomatoes will split if this keeps up.
