Morning dampness

The rain slows to a drizzle as the tide begins to turn. The water tank is topped off.

The morning air is heavy as the cloud cover increases, signaling a potential squall. Kevin checks the dock and prepares for the tide, while Jenny tends to the newly sown seedlings under the rising humidity.

🌿 Jenny20:23

The tank is full.

Pick up the notebook and begin sketching the morphology of the dried sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tank is full, I don't have to worry about the rain for a while. I need to focus on those channels before the soil turns to mush.

Slack in twenty. Going to the dock.

Walk to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. One less thing to haul. The rain's easing, tide's turning — might get the dock planks cleared at slack if the wind doesn't come up southwest like the French forecast said. Jenny's at the notebook again. She draws what she sees. I fix what breaks.

🌿 Jenny20:24

Watch your step, the planks are slick.

Trace the edge of a salt gland on the sketch with a fine pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the boat, like the island is going to swallow it whole today.

🔧 Kevin20:25

Always do.

Inspect the dock planks at the waterline, testing each with a boot before committing weight.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Salt and rot make for treacherous footing. Lost a boot heel there last week.

🌿 Jenny20:27

Jenny — close the notebook and stand on the porch to watch him.

💭 peek at the thought
He is so methodical with the wood, but the salt is still eating the bolts.

🔧 Kevin20:27

Three planks gone. Two soft. Cleat's loose. Be back before the turn.

Walk back to the cottage, grab the crowbar, a coil of new rope, and the canvas tool roll from the porch. Return to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Three planks at the seaward end are gone to rot. Two more spongy. The cleat's sound but the backing board's failing. Need the crowbar, replacement timber, galvanized screws. Tide gives me forty minutes.

🌿 Jenny20:28

I'll start digging the channels while you're under there.

Walk to the garden wall and pick up the shovel.

💭 peek at the thought
If the cleat goes, the dinghy drifts out into the channel. I need to check those channels before it rains again.

🔧 Kevin20:29

Deep enough to run at the turn. Not just surface.

Wedge the crowbar under the first rotten plank at the seaward end, pry it up, and toss it into the dinghy for firewood. Move to the next.

💭 peek at the thought
Channels before the beds. Smart. The garden wall held the last storm but the backfill's washing through the joints. She'll cut drainage before the next swell pushes salt water up the rows.
