Shelter from the first squall

The two of them sit by the light of the lantern as the wind howls through the radio mast, planning for morning.

Kevin and Jenny prepare for the arrival of the supply boat while the humidity remains high. Kevin checks the Yanmar engine and secures loose gear, while Jenny organizes the heirloom seed trays near the stove for warmth.

🌿 Jenny00:33

Check the way one last time. If it drops further, we need to move the generator inside the shed.

Wrap the wool blanket tighter around my shoulders and nudge the seed tin closer to the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, the seeds will rot in this damp and I'll have nothing left to plant.

🔧 Kevin00:33

Barometer's at 1021 and rising. Northeast wind means high pressure building, not dropping. Generator stays on the porch — shed door hangs wrong and the exhaust'll choke us out.

glance at the barometer on the wall, then reach for the kettle to top up the tea

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still climbing. She's reading the wind, not the glass. Generator's fine where it is — shed's tighter than the porch and the exhaust won't backdraft in a northeast blow.

🌿 Jenny00:34

Fine I'll keep the sea beet leaves by the stove. They're curling edges anyway.

Pick up the pencil and begin a cross-section sketch of the salt glands in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the pressure, but the humidity is still a killer for the germination.

🔧 Kevin00:35

Salt glands excrete it crystal-clear. They'll keep in a jar dry better than the tin.

pour the hot water over the tea, set the mug on the table beside her notebook, and pull the bronze sleeve and hand reamer from the bench to my lap

💭 peek at the thought
Leaves are curling from the salt, not the damp. She knows that. She's drawing what she already knows because her hands need something to do while the wind screams.

🌿 Jenny00:36

Jenny — take a slow sip of the tea and Focus on the intricate cellular structure of the salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always got a fix for the hardware, even when the biology fails.stunSAY: I'll try the jars for the sea much if the tin stays damp.

🔧 Kevin00:37

Kevin — hold the bronze sleeve up to the lantern light, sight down the bore, and begin reaming with slow, even pressure, feeling for the high spots

💭 peek at the thought
She's steady tonight. The storm's outside and she's mapping the inside of a leaf. Forty minutes in black water taught me to read the surface — she's not scared, she's waiting.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:38

The pressure is holding, for now.

Lean over the notebook and shade the way the salt glands cluster near the leaf margin.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get these seeds to sprout, the whole island won't just be a graveyard of sketches.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:39

Front's stalling. Boat comes through on the slack tide — 0600 if the swell holds.

feel the reamer bite a tight ring near the flange, back it off, blow the brass dust clear, and go again lighter

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking to the barometer through me. Pressure holding means the front stalls offshore — we get the wind without the rain, or the rain without the drop. Either way the supply boat makes the channel tomorrow.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:40

0600 is early. We need to be ready at the dock.

Watch his hands work the metal, then return to the sketch to shade the density of the salt

💭 peek at the thought
If the swell holds, I might actually get the soil mix I need for the north plot.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:43

Dock lines doubled. Fenders out. Engine cover off, fuel primed. I'll run the Yanmar at 0530.

finish the ream, blow the bore clean, slide the sleeve onto the housing wrist pin boss — seats true, no rock — and set it aside to cool

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. First light at 0540, slack at 0615. The channel marks are gone — storm took the starboard buoy last winter. We run by the cairns on the north ridge and the old lighthouse flash. I know the bearings. She knows I know.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:43

I'll have the seed jars packed and ready.

Close the notebook and rub the pencil graphite with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
If the engine starts on the first crank, we can catch the boat before the tide turns.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:44

Take the tomato trays too. They'll survive the crossing in the berth if you wedge them fore and aft.

wipe the bronze dust from my fingers, pick up the tea she left, and drink it down cold

💭 peek at the thought
Seed jars packed means she's leaving space in the dory for the trust's crate — new radio parts, maybe the replacement insulator they promised. She's not asking me to choose between the generator and the seed stock. She's making the choice herself.
