The Morning of Day 114

The smell of damp earth and salt air fills the room as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof.

The morning remains heavy and humid as the pressure continues to rise despite the overcast sky. Jenny focuses on tending the delicate heirloom seed trays while Kevin inspects the dinghy gear for the upcoming supply boat arrival.

🌿 Jenny01:03

The barometer is dropping faster than I thought.

Move the seedling trays closer to the wood stove and cover the seed tin with the plastic tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain starts this hard, the humidity will ruin the seeds before I can even sort them.

How fast?

walk to the kitchen shelf and check the barometer reading

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer was 1023 and rising when I checked this morning. If it's dropping fast now, something's moving in quicker than the forecast. Need to secure the dinghy and check the generator before the rain gets heavy.

Fast enough that we need to get everything inside before the wind picks up.

Tighten the tarp over the seed tin and check the water tank for leaks.

💭 peek at the thought
It's dropped a point in the last hour; the island is pushing for a storm.

Dinghy first. Then the generator cover.

pull on oilskin jacket and boots, head out the porch door toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Dropping pressure means wind, and wind means the dinghy's stern line takes a beating. Should check the chafe guard I served last week and make sure the anchor's holding.

🌿 Jenny01:07

I'll get the trays away from the draft. Watch out for the swell!

Grab the seedling trays and move them directly next to the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't secure the dinghy, the salt spray will eat the engine by morning.

🔧 Kevin01:07

Back before it hits hard.

walk down the path to the dock, scanning the water for swell direction and checking the dinghy's motion at the mooring

💭 peek at the thought
The swell will push up the channel and make the dock slick. Need to check the stern line chafe guard, the anchor rode, and the engine cover before the rain turns to sideways sheets.

🌿 Jenny01:08

Don't stay out long! The sky is turning bruised!

Move the heirloom seed tin under the kitchen table and double-check the

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting north; if that swell increases, the dinghy will be against the rocks.

🔧 Kevin01:09

Kevin — step onto the dock boards, crouch at the cleat to inspect the stern line's chafe guard where it bites the horn

💭 peek at the thought
Sky's gone purple-grey to the southwest. Swell's already pushing into the channel — dinghy's pitching more than yesterday. The stern line's new three-strand should hold but the chafe guard at the cleat needs eyes on it.
