The Morning Tide

Kevin and Jenny stand on the newly replaced planks as the tide recedes from the pilings. Jenny checks the barometer reading while Kevin inspects the tension on the dinghy's reinforced stern line.

The sun rises over a calm sea, casting long shadows across the dock planks. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing slick rocks and trapped fish in the tide pools below. Kevin and Jenny stand by the water, the air humid and warm as they prepare to tackle the day's labor before the supply boat arrives.

Line's holding. Splice took the overnight swell clean.

crouch at the cleat, run thumb along the served splice where new rope meets old, checking for chafe

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the glass like it owes her money. Tide's dropping clean, barometer holding — rare morning you don't wake braced for something. Stern line's solid, splice didn't slip. Engine's ready. Sail's the only thing between us and a proper sea trial.

🌿 Jenny01:52

Check the cleat again. The salt eats the fibers before you know.

Trace the edge of the sea beet sketch in the notebook, feeling the grain of the paper under my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the rope, but I'm looking at the salt glands on the sea beet. He doesn't see the engineering of it.

Bolt holes weep. Bedded them in epoxy but the tide works it loose.

stand, wipe salt crust from the cleat base with thumb, peer up at the masthead where the aerial wire sings in the light breeze

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Salt gets into everything — rope, wood, skin. Cleat's galvanized but the bolt holes weep rust. Should've bedded them proper last week.

🌿 Jenny01:54

We'll need to re-drill and use wood plugs. Epoxy won't hold against the vibration.

Close the notebook with a sharp thud and** the pencil into my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
If the bolts fail, the whole jetty goes. He treats the island like a machine, I see the slow rot.

🔧 Kevin01:55

Drill press is in the shed. Bits are blunt.

turn toward the cottage, boot heels loud on the new planks, hand brushing the dinghy gunwale as I pass — cold, damp, ready

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Vibration from the Yanmar shakes everything loose — cleats, bolts, teeth. Wood plugs and fresh epoxy, drilled clean. Another job for the list that never shrinks.

🌿 Jenny01:57

I'll sharpen them myself. I need to boil the limpets before the sun gets too high.

Walk own the tide pools, avoiding the rotten gaps in the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
It's always the tools with him, never the purpose. I'm hungry and so tired.

🔧 Kevin01:57

Bring the big pot. Skillet handle's loose.

walk up the path toward the cottage and shed, fishing the drill bit roll from the porch rail where I left it yesterday

💭 peek at the thought
Limpets toughen fast in heat. She knows that. Sharp bits, boiled limpets, sail still half-stitched on the porch. Day's already splitting.

🌿 Jenny01:58

I'll get it. I'm starting the limpets.

Reach into the water and gather the handful of limpets, their shells cold and rough against my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He can't even fix a handle without me pointing out the screw. The island is winning today.
