The Humid Watch

The two retreat inside the cottage as the temperature remains high, the barometer continuing its slow drop while the rat in the pantry grows louder in the dark.

The air is heavy and still, smelling of salt and damp earth as the wet season lingers. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the base of the north cliffs. Inside the cottage, the humidity is thick, making the drying heirloom seeds feel heavy and cool to the touch.

🌿 Jenny02:31

Stay back from the stove, Kevin. I'll handle it.

Pick up the heavy cast iron skillet and move toward the' wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If that rat gets into the tin, I'll lose everything my grandmother left me in one night.

Kevin — step sideways to the kitchen doorway, giving her room to swing while keeping the exit clear.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving toward the wall with the skillet. The rat's in the pantry behind the shelves — that wall. She means to flush it or crush it. Either way, she's between me and the stove if the skillet connects with something hard.

🌿 Jenny02:32

Don't move until I'm done.

Raise the skillet and strike at the gap behind the pantry shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to be careful; I can't crush the heirloom seeds in the panic.

🔧 Kevin02:33

Kevin — shift weight to the balls of my feet, watching the baseboard line toward the bedroom door, ready to block its escape.

💭 peek at the thought
She's committed now. The gap behind the pantry shelf — she's going for a killing blow. If she misses or the rat bolts, it'll run along the baseboard toward the bedroom. I should be ready at the far end.
